About the organisation
Charterpath is a relatively new non-profit organisation on a mission to inspire more accountants to volunteer their time and skills to the non-profit sector. Volunteers with financial skills are always in demand and never more so following the pandemic and the current cost-of-living crisis, which have led to a decrease in funding but an uptick in demand for charity services. The training which accountants receive is so broad it allows them to contribute to everything from book-keeping to strategic planning, risk assessments, and everything in between. Whilst lawyers undertake pro bono work as part of their qualification, accountants tend to stumble across volunteering by accident or only start looking for roles once they have retired. The average trustee of a UK charity is over 50, white, male and of above average income - as a result there is an increasing quest for diverse candidates.
As well as inspiring accountants to get involved, Charterpath aims to connect them with non-profit opportunities, and engage with accounting institutes and corporates, to embed volunteering as a core part of an accountant’s career. We deliver this vision through social media campaigns, a website promoting opportunities and useful resources and organising events to spread awareness. Our vision is the Charterpath becomes a community of support for all accountant volunteers.
Since we launched our website in 2021, we have gained over 1,000 social media followers, have over 150 signed up Charterpath volunteers, and 25 accountants already matched with non-profits. What’s more, 45% of our volunteers are female, over 40% non-white and over 50% under the age of 35 – representing the diversity which non-profits are looking for!
We have recently agreed an exciting new partnership with Marks Sattin, a specialist recruiter with a network of over 100,000 accountants. This gives an amazing platform from which to promote skills-based volunteering and inspire more people to chart a path into the non-profit sector. We are exploring a number of similar corporate partnerships to further help the organisation scale. We believe Charterpath can make a huge difference in the sector.
