Getting On Board aims to improve the diversity of trustee boards. They offer guides to finding your first role, workshops, webinars and bespoke support. They also offer a Future Trustees training programme.

Less than 3% of Trustees are under 30 — the Young Trustees Movement aims to address this. The YTM offers opportunities, a blog, podcast and networking events to inspire and support young people to become trustees.

Goodmoves is focused on non-profit roles in Scotland. They have a dedicated section for Volunteering with roles including Trustees, Treasurers, Assistant Treasurers and Book-keepers. Training programmes also available.

Pilotlight supports other charities by matching them with skilled volunteers — Pilotlighters. As a Pilotlighter you join a team of other senior leaders to coach a charity through the strategic challenges they face and learn whilst you are doing it!

Nurole aims to improve the diversity of boards, including non-profits, across the world. You need to request an invite to join — members should have leadership experience that has readied them for a board-level position.

Trustees Unlimited believe good governance strengthens society. Register for opportunities, newsletters and events. They also offer training programmes — Step on Board and Thrive on Board — to enhance your impact as a new trustee.

MCR Pathways is a Scottish charity whose vision is that all young people get the same education outcomes, career opportunities and life chances. They run a nationwide mentoring programme which provides disadvantaged young people with a mentor.

Women on Boards aims to help women make the right connections and career choices to taken on a board role, including in the non-profit sector. Their support ranges from interviewing, training, networking and an impressive vacancy board.

NCVO provides practical resources to support non-profits with the running of their organisations. Their Knowledgebank is a treasure trove of info including How To Guides and the Studyzone offers free E-learning and online courses.

Charity Finance Group run a wide range of events and training courses, very relevant for Charterpath volunteers. Prices vary but CFG members benefit from discounts.

Third Sector is the UK’s leading publication for non-profit sector news through their website, podcast, magazine and events. They also advertise opportunities — these are mostly for full-time roles rather than volunters.

Cause4 aims to help charities ‘achieve more and better’. They offer a variety of training from Power Hours to e-learning and governance reviews. The Trustee Leadership Programme and Emerging Chairs Programme are particularly worthwhile.

The Association of Chairs offers support and networking for chairs of non-profits. Their practical guide ‘A Chair's Compass’ focuses on the challenges and opportunities of being a Chair and how to succeed in the role.

The DSC aims to support charities in everything they do. They provide training, publications, research, conferences and lots of free resources including top tips and best-practice articles. We recommend their Charity Treasurer's Handbook.

The NGA is a one-stop shop for school governors and trustees. It aims to increase the effectiveness of boards by providing guidance, professional development and e-learning. There is also a Young Governors network for the under 40s.

Board Racial Diversity UK has a package of resources from volunteer roles to a peer support network for aspiring and current Black and Asian trustees.

Governors for Schools find and place volunteers on school and academy governing boards across England and Wales. Apply to become a governor, read governor stories and access e-learning.

The Academy Ambassadors Programme provides a free, bespoke service matching professionals with multi-academy trusts (groups of schools) to strengthen their boards. It provides info, testimonials and events to help you find the right opportunity.

Inspiring the Future aims to give young people an insight into as many careers as possible, by connecting them with people passionate about their work. Pledge just 1 hour a year to attend a local school and talk to students about their career path.

Ark aims to transform children’s lives through education with a network of 38 schools in the UK. You can search for opportunities to mentor students and recent alumni with guidance including CV advice, mock interviews and career talks. Or apply for a governor role.

Charity Excellence is a great resource to support volunteers in situ, with toolkits and databases on everything from fundraising to pro bono advice plus a set of questionnaires to evaluate an organisation’s effectiveness.

Charity Intelligence provides charities with a free, impartial online hub for the review and comparison of investment managers, lawyers, accountants, insurance services and other experts with specialist knowledge of the charity space. They also have a good list of upcoming events organised by charity advisers, which includes charity accounting training.

Embrace Finance offer monthly peer and learn sessions where you can discuss topics you are grappling with in small groups alongside others in charity roles. Their aim is to build your financial confidence so you can build your social impact or as they put it….. dedicated to changing the world one spreadsheet at a time!!
