“Knowing the people I have worked with over the years who are often kind hearted and generous I feel there is no lack of supply of talent and will. The key is sourcing the opportunities which is why, again, I think Charterpath is something I very much support.”

What do you most enjoy about volunteering?

I started volunteering only about 3 years ago, when my youngest daughter turned 3 and parenting became marginally less intense! Before children I had committed a lot of time to my career and it finally felt the right time to start giving something back. I was looking for a role which would complement my specialist skills and the opportunity at Brunel University arose by chance through a referral from one of my mentors. I interviewed and got the role. I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity as not everybody will have such access to such referrals… which is why Charterpath is such a great initiative!

What do you most enjoy about volunteering?

I enjoy bringing my perspective to the role. The Audit Committee Chair is a good facilitator and brings all members into the conversation. The key challenge (and therefore pleasure when you feel you have done it right) is knowing that you have set the right constructive tension with the Executive, whilst also being understanding of their situation.

How have your accountancy skills come into play?

My accounting skills are directly applicable. I am able to probe and question the CFO on key aspects of his delivery. My external and internal audit experience also means that I am able to probe and question some of the key contributors to the audit committee.

What have you learnt from volunteering?

Simply how rewarding I find it. It also helps provide balance to me and makes sure I have to prioritise other things than just work. In addition, the Brunel Audit Committee role gives me helps me look at things from the perspective of an audit client, as such this helps me become a better auditor myself.

What would be your one piece of advice for accountants looking to volunteer?

Any volunteering is great, but if possible look for a role that will use the skills you have worked so hard to develop over the years. This is where you will have the most impact.

How can get more accountants volunteering?

Knowing the people I have worked with over the years who are often kind hearted and generous I feel there is no lack of supply of talent and will. The key is sourcing the opportunities which is why, again, I think Charterpath is something I very much support.
