About the organisation

The Worker Support Centre (WSC) prevents labour abuse and exploitation, by providing direct support, building power and developing policy solutions for migrant workers on restrictive visas. WSC offers support, mediation and advice to workers and builds leadership and solidarity where trade union representation is low or absent. Our policy work ensures the knowledge and experiences of migrant workers feeds directly into local, national and global policy formulation. The WSC model is based on best practice examples from around the world - outreach and engagement is led by staff who speak the languages of those we support and who have lived experience of the issues faced by workers on restrictive visas. Our expertise in human trafficking prevention enables WSC to target policy and support interventions to prevent exploitation.

Understanding of risk of exploitation

The WSC addresses three factors that increase the risks of labour abuse and forced labour:

the nature of the work environment, the dynamics of supply chains, and the structure of the immigration system.

The risks to workers are increased in:

Labour sectors where workers have limited power or representation, and there is low labour law compliance;

Supply chains characterised by extensive outsourcing, concentrated power, and poor governance.

Immigration systems that are highly restrictive of workers’ movement, prevent integration and limit access to services.

WSC has four part time staff members and six Trustees. Our staff are based in Scotland,

where our organisation is headquartered. WSC strives to achieve representation of

individuals with lived experience of the issues on which we work at all levels of our

organisation and actively promote applications from individuals with experience of the

issues on which we work.
