About the organisation

Urban Promise UK is a small growing charity that launched after school programmes for children and teens in Marks Gate, in the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham in 2022.

Our aim is to see children and young people break through barriers to success so that they can thrive personally, academically and spiritually. We do this through our Student Leader programme for teens, that gives job training and builds leadership skills and our free after school and holiday clubs for primary school aged children.

Since beginning programmes in 2022 we have served over 2500 meals to children and teens, provided more than 200 hours of free professional GCSE and A-level tuition, and supported families with more than 3000 hours of free after school and holiday activities.

About the role

The trustees are responsible for setting strategy and overseeing policy and governance to guide and support the charity directors. Board meetings are held online, quarterly, in the evening from 8pm - 9.30pm, with Trustees meeting once a year in person. Commitments outside of meeting times vary depending on a trustee's additional role(s) but usually total approximately 4 hours a month. The intial term is for 3 years with an option to renew.

A treasurer would be required to work with the staff team in developing a strategic budget, take a lead in preparing annual accounts, and perform simple administrative tasks, such as the making payments for salaries and invoices.

Our ideal candidate

To help us grow we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our board. Previous trustee experience is not essential as training can be provided. We value kindness and passion for young people and look for those with any volunteering and community involvement as well as work-based knowledge and skills. This post carries an Occupational Requirement that the postholder be a committed Christian.

We require someone with the skills to develop a budget, ensure good financial practice, and produce accurate reports.

We are guided by our SPIRIT values in everything we do and all of our trustees are expected to demonstrate and uphold these values in their work. We are:

Servants

Partners

Innovative

Reliable

Inclusive

Transparent

We are passionate about diversity and particularly welcome applications from women, those of different ethnicities, under 30s, people with lived experience of growing up in inner city London, as we are looking to diversify our board to better represent those we serve.

All recruitment is subject to a DBS and satisfactory adherence with our

safe recruitment proceedure.

What’s in it for you

Urban Promise UK is achieving remarkable things in Marks Gate, with children's reading improving exponentially, young people acting as caring role models for younger children, and all of our families being inspired by the hope they see within our team.

As a trustee you will become a key part of our community, and the extended family of UPUK, supporting education, wellness, and opportunity in a part of London that has long been overlooked.

As we grow the work we are doing is being more widely recognised by local councils, churches, and community groups. We have been invited to consider adding sites and locations to our work and as treasurer you will play a central role in managing this growth. Over the coming years there is the potential to impact hundreds of young lives with strong local provision in London and beyond.
