The United Charities of Cambridge continues the philanthropic work of its 17thCentury benefactors for the benefit of the people of Cambridge and its surrounding area through the provision of almshouse accommodation, the relief of poverty and the education of the young. About the role

This Trustee and Treasurer role is ideal for someone who enjoys using their financial expertise to guide good decisions and strengthen how an organisation operates. As Chair of the Resources Sub‑Committee, you’ll help shape financial planning and ensure the Board has clear, reliable information when it matters. You’ll review quarterly management accounts, lead the annual budgeting process, and oversee key areas such as insurance renewals and payroll. Your contribution gives the board confidence and clarity and helps the organisation plan responsibly for the future.


The resorces sub-commitee meets 3 times per year. The Trustee Board meets 3 times per year.


You’ll also play a valuable part in wider operational areas. The role includes liaising with our book-keepers, auditors, supporting property‑related decisions, offering ideas around investment management and involvement in ad-hoc projects. It suits someone who enjoys variety, likes practical problem‑solving, and wants to be a steady, trusted voice in governance. Our ideal candidate

Professional financal background. Experience with managing budgeting, management and annual accounts.

Almshouses are a long established way of creating a safe and secure long-term housing solution for those in need. The charity also supports the less well advantaged people of Cambridge and the surrounding villages through a mixture of short-term and long terms grants to the those in need and other charities who are supporting them The charity is run by a group of volunteer trustees who are friendly, supportive and seek to give something back to the community in which they live.
