We believe in the power of the written and spoken word to transform lives. It is everyone’s right to express themselves through creativity and imagination. Great ideas can and do come from anyone and anywhere.

Our mission is to support writers in Cornwall at every stage of their journey. We enable emerging writers, children & young people and the Cornish community to value their voice, tell their stories and be widely heard.

About the role

The Writers’ Block is seeking a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees and further our mission to support writers in Cornwall at every stage of their journey. The Treasurer plays a vital role in ensuring the financial health and sustainability of the charity, providing oversight, guidance, and hands-on support as appropriate for a small organisation.

Time committment:

  • Attend 4 meetings per year, at least one of these is in-person in Redruth, Cornwall.

  • Meet regularly with the Development Director to oversee financial reporting and other requirements (usually online).

  • Meet with core team and other trustees as required for specific tasks such as recruitment.

  • Respond to emails requesting financial authorisation or other information in a timely manner.

  • Attend events to experience the work of the organisation as required.

We run a 3 year

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing the financial affairs of the charity and ensuring they are conducted in line with legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Working closely with the Development Director to monitor the charity’s financial position and ensuring its short and long-term viability.

  • Liaising with the Development Director on their preparation and presentation of the management accounts and the annual budget to the Board.

  • Contributing to the preparation of the annual accounts by reviewing and providing feedback on draft financial statements and trustees’ reports.

  • Advising the Development Director and fellow trustees on financial matters and contributing to strategic planning from a financial perspective.

Deadline 5pm on 15th September 2025.

Our ideal candidate

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Financial literacy and experience managing budgets, accounts, and financial reporting – ideally within the charity or small business sector.
  • Familiarity with charity accounting principles and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to present financial information clearly and accessibly to the Board, some of whom may not have financial backgrounds.
  • Experience with bookkeeping, financial systems, or working with accountants or independent examiners is a plus.
  • A collaborative approach and a commitment to supporting the charity’s artistic and community aims.

This is a rewarding opportunity to contribute your financial expertise to a creative and community-focused organisation. We welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences, including those who may not have previously served on a board.

What’s in it for you

The Writers' Block makes a difference to individuals, particuarly those who have barriers to writing or whose voices have been historically under-represented. As treasurer you will be a key part in supporting this much loved organisation to thrive. The core team are small, but mighty, and the board of trustees are integral to extending the reach, expertise and knowledge of the team. They enable us to do what we do best:

In 2024-25 we worked with 1,691 children and young people, of whom 60 were specifically

identified as vulnerable; 122 teachers; and 724 adults, of whom 48 experience disadvantage.

Our work makes a difference:

‐ We significantly improve young people’s literacy skills, enthusiasm and confidence in writing, with teachers

reporting lasting classroom changes.

‐ We create meaningful connections for vulnerable young people, combating isolation and giving young

people a voice.

‐ We elevate under‐heard voices and stories, creating representation that resonates with both participants

and audiences.

‐ We provide crucial professional development for writers and performers, with the vast majority reporting

significant growth and many translating their experience into paid opportunities.

‐ Our bespoke, personalised approach addresses specific community needs, creating impact that extends

beyond quantitative measures into meaningful life changes "one story at a time."

‘Sarah’s autism creates lots of anxiety and sensory issues and your activities provide an impetus to attend

(she loves writing) in a safe, supportive environment with like‐minded individuals‐ thank you.’

“I have one student who is very imaginative but completely struggles to get words on paper. Introducing the free write was so helpful in unlocking his brain and getting words on paper. I have seen more work from him throughout this process than in the 2 years I have been teaching him.” Treviglas Academy

“The phone calls with Helen, and her meeting me in the carpark, helped me get through the door”
