About the organisation
The Violence Interven on Project was founded in 2017, following our CEO Charlie Rigby's work with young people involved with or at risk of gangs and serious youth violence at Hammersmith Council. That work revealed a clear gap: while systems responded to behaviour and risk, there was very little long-term therapeutic work addressing the emotional drivers beneath it. Drawing on the insight that shame - not guilt, but the deeper feeling of being fundamentally inadequate, unworthy, or exposed - sits at the root of much harmful behaviour, VIP was built around a shame-informed, relational model of change.
Our core work, Urban Therapy, is delivered across West London - in schools, on estates, in homes, and wherever else young people feel the system is out of reach. Our outreach workers and therapeutic practitioners build long term relationships with young people aged 12–25 at risk of serious youth violence, alongside their families and networks, offering 1:1 therapeutic outreach, education/training/employment support, and family support work. We currently work across several West London boroughs, including Hammersmith & Fulham, Hounslow, Ealing, and Harrow, and are expanding into Brent.
Alongside our frontline prac ce, The Shame Initiative (TSI) is our newest and most ambi ous programme - offering training, tools, and consultancy to practitioners, academics, funders, and policymakers, with the aim of shifting how the wider sector understands and responds to young people affected by shame and violence. In its first quarter alone, TSI trained over 100 frontline professionals, and our ambition is national reach.
VIP is a small, values-led organisa on with big ambitions: to deepen and expand our West London frontline work, and to build a genuinely national movement around shame-informed practice.
About the role
The Treasurer leads the Board's oversight of VIP's financial affairs, working closely with the CEO, Director of Operations & Delivery, and our accountancy partner. You will ensure the Board has a clear, accurate understanding of VIP's financial position, that sound financial management and controls are in place, and that the Board is well placed to support VIP's income diversification and long-term financial resilience.
Financial Oversight
• Monitor the charity's financial position and financial performance.
• Ensure accurate financial records are maintained.
• Review and present financial reports to trustee meetings.
• Help prepare and monitor annual budgets.
• Ensure appropriate financial controls and risk management procedures are in place.
• Oversee banking arrangements and cash flow management.
Governance and Compliance
• Ensure the charity complies with relevant financial regulations and reporting requirements.
• Support the preparation and submission of annual accounts and returns.
• Liaise with independent examiners where required.
• Advise the board on financial implications of strategic decisions.
• Ensure funds are used in accordance with the charity's objectives and any donor restrictions.
Strategic Contribution
• Contribute actively to the overall governance and leadership of the charity.
• Support financial planning and sustainability initiatives.
• Assist with fundraising strategy by assessing the financial viability of projects and funding opportunities.
• Help identify and manage financial risks.

Essential Skills and Experience
• Experience of financial management, bookkeeping, accounting, banking, or budgeting.
• Ability to understand and interpret financial information.
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
• Ability to explain financial matters clearly to non-financial colleagues.
• Commitment to the charity's mission and values.
Desirable Skills and Experience
• Professional accounting qualification or financial management experience.
• Previous trustee, committee, or board experience.
• Knowledge of charity finance and Charity Commission requirements.
• Experience of budgeting, forecasting, or financial controls within a voluntary, public, or private sector organisation.

VIP's work is built on the understanding that shame and the poverty, exclusion, trauma, and discrimina on that can produce it - shapes how young people experience the world and the systems around them. We believe that boards which include people with lived experience of these issues make better, more grounded decisions, and we actively welcome applications from people with this experience alongside financial expertise.

• Financial management: We've brought a new accountancy partner on board, and will shortly be moving all of our finances onto Xero. Alongside this, we've been consolidating our financial policies into a clearer, more robust framework.
● Governance: We've recently completed a governance review and recruited two new trustees. We now have a well-engaged Board, and are in the process of developing our next three-year strategy.
● Income strategy: Our funding base has traditionally rested on trusts and grants, and this remains a core strength we intend to keep building. Alongside it, over the coming three years we are diversifying our income - exploring the role of social value in our funding relationships, and growing our earned income through the start of The Shame Initiative, our training and consultancy offer.
This is a pivotal moment for VIP financially, and the Treasurer will play a central role in helping us navigate it; bringing rigour to a strengthening financial base while supporting a genuine shift towards a more diversified, resilient income model.
