About the organisation
Our overall objective at The Uganda School Project is to relieve poverty and improve future livelihood opportunities for children in rural Uganda.
We currently focus our work in Namisindwa District, an area of Eastern Uganda that suffers from significant regional inequality in terms of its economic welfare (estimated poverty headcount: 41.9%), and educational outcomes (29% Primary Exam failure rate - the highest in the country).
This is done through the provision of a quality ‘educational infrastructure’ (classrooms, facilities and other infrastructure that provides a safe and effective learning environment for our learners) as well as ‘educational development’ (capacity building of teachers through training workshops, as well as literacy and phonics programmes for children that need them).
We believe that keeping children in school for longer, and improving educational standards whilst they are at school, will have an exponential positive impact on the social development of the communities where our project is located.
About the role
We are looking for someone with skills and experience in bookkeeping and accounting in an NGO/charitable context to become a trustee for The Uganda School Project.
The position would be 100% remote, with trustee meetings taking place quarterly/biannually.
Operational support sought would be in the form of monthly bookkeeping/reconciliation, as well as preparing year-end financial accounts and assisting in preparation of budgets, and allocation of funds to maximise impact. We anticipate this taking approx 3-4hrs/month but this can be discussed. Initially there may be a higher workload whilst onboard, streamline and improve our existing financial processes.
Successful candidates will receive the necessary training, onboarding and ongoing support needed to carry out their role effectively.
The role is voluntary but any out-of-pocket expenses will of course be reimbursed.
Trustees typically meet twice a year for general meetings, but we may ask for more regular (monthly) finance meetings in the initial stages.
Our ideal candidate
Experience and expertise in bookeeping, finance and accounting in a charity context is strongly preferred.
Hands-on, positive, flexible attitude is also required - the charity's director is looking for operational support as well as strategic diretion.
Lived experience of Uganda's educational system is also desirable.
What’s in it for you
The clarity of our financial position and ease of recording this information will provide the platform to help us use existing funds as effectively as possible, plan for the future activities accordinhly, prioritise activities where necessary, and also raise funds to expand the scope of our activities: your input will help more school construction and more educational capacity building in rural Uganda.
