The Sleep Charity is a dynamic and award-winning national organisation on a mission to ensure that everyone has access to the support they need for a good night’s sleep. As we enter a pivotal phase in our strategic development, we are seeking a new Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees.
This voluntary role offers the opportunity to make a significant difference by helping us ensure sound financial oversight and contributing to our strategic success. The Treasurer will bring financial expertise, strategic thinking, and a deep commitment to our mission.

About the role
The role of Treasurer is critical to our success. As we continue to grow and diversify our income streams, the Treasurer ensures strong financial health, transparency, and compliance. Working closely with our Finance Manager and CEO, you will provide expert financial guidance to the Board, helping shape long-term strategy and secure sustainability.
Location: Remote with occasional travel to Doncaster for quarterly meetings
Time Commitment: Approx. 1–2 days per month (includes meetings and support)
Remuneration: Voluntary (expenses reimbursed)
Term: Three-year term, renewable for up to two further terms
The Treasurer has specific responsibility for ensuring the Board fulfils its duty to protect the charity’s assets and manage its finances prudently. This includes oversight of budgets, accounts, financial controls, and risk management.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Financial Oversight
• Monitor the financial standing of the charity and report to the Board
• Ensure robust financial planning, budgeting and forecasting processes
• Oversee long-term investment and sustainability strategy
Governance and Compliance
• Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and reporting requirements
• Support preparation of annual accounts and liaise with external auditors
• Advise on financial policies, risk, reserves and investment strategies
Board Engagement
• Present financial reports clearly at Board meetings
• Chair the Finance Subcommittee (if applicable)
• Build financial literacy among trustees where required
Executive Support
• Act as a sounding board for the CEO and Finance Manager
• Help review contracts or financial elements of grant applications
Our ideal candidate
In addition to the qualities required of a Trustee of the charity, they must also meet the following requirements:
Experience
• Qualified accountant or equivalent experience (essential)
• Financial leadership in the charity, public or private sectors
• Strategic oversight of budgets, investments or reserves
• Experience of charity governance or as a trustee (desirable)
Knowledge and Skills
• Understanding of charity SORP, governance and compliance
• Ability to communicate financial information to non-finance experts
• Sound judgement and willingness to speak up in the best interest of the charity
