About the organisation
The Road Safety Trust is the UK’s largest independent grant funder of road safety initiatives.
We support research and practical projects that aim to reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads – funding more than 140 projects since the charity was established in 2014 and awarding nearly £13million in grants.
Principally, our goal is to support innovative road safety research or practical interventions designed to reduce the number of people killed or injured on our roads. Practical interventions might focus on education, engineering or enforcement approaches or a combination of these.
About the role
As a Trustee and member of The Road Safety Trust’s Audit and Risk Committee, you will help guide the charity’s strategic direction, safeguard its resources and support its vision of zero deaths and serious injuries on UK roads. Working collectively with fellow trustees, you will ensure the Trust remains well governed, financially sustainable and accountable, with its activities focused on delivering its charitable purposes.
The role combines the responsibilities of a Board Trustee with additional oversight through the Audit and Risk Committee. You will bring independent judgement, relevant expertise and constructive challenge to discussions and decisions. Your contribution will help the Board assess performance, understand significant risks and make informed decisions about the Trust’s future. Trustees provide strategic oversight, while responsibility for day-to-day management remains with the executive team.
Your responsibilities as a Trustee will include:
- Acting in the best interests of the Trust and its charitable purposes, in accordance with its governing document and legal and regulatory duties.
- Contributing to the development of the Trust’s strategy and monitoring its performance, outcomes and impact.
- Holding the executive team to account through informed questions, constructive challenge and appropriate support.
- Overseeing financial sustainability, the proper use of resources and the management of significant organisational risks.
- Attending Board and committee meetings, reviewing papers in advance and contributing actively to collective decisions.
- Maintaining confidentiality, declaring and managing conflicts of interest or loyalty, and demonstrating high standards of integrity and governance.
- Providing advice and support to senior management where appropriate, while respecting the distinction between governance and operational management.
As an Audit and Risk Committee member, you will scrutinise financial reporting, audit, internal controls, risk and governance across the Trust, including relevant matters relating to UKROEd. Specific responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing annual accounts and financial reporting, including relevant reporting on UKROEd, and recommending the accounts to the Board for approval.
- Reviewing the effectiveness of statutory and internal audit arrangements, considering audit findings and monitoring progress against recommendations.
- Scrutinising financial, accounting and tax policies, expenditure controls and internal control arrangements, including relevant IT controls.
- Reviewing measures to prevent and respond to fraud.
- Challenging how strategic risks are identified, assessed and managed, including through the Strategic Risk Register.
- Reviewing the investment policy alongside the Trust’s reserves policy and appetite for risk.
- Reviewing governance and compliance arrangements, reporting to the Board on the Committee’s work and effectiveness, and undertaking other responsibilities delegated by the Board.
The annual commitment includes one in-person risk workshop, at least three Audit and Risk Committee meetings, including one in person, and four Board meetings, including two in person, plus preparation time. The role is unpaid, with necessary travel expenses reimbursed. Trustees serve an initial three-year term.
