About the organisation

In 2022 The Olive Project was founded by women from black and minoritized communities. It was founded in response to the lack of specialist support for Black and Minoritized Victims and Survivors (BMVS) of Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (DA/SV).

In the two years since our inception we have supported over 100 beneficiaries. The support includes:

  • Logistical support plans to flee from high risk abuse
  • Securing safe accommodation
  • Advocacy when engaging with statutory services
  • Emergency support packages including food vouchers and accommodation
  • Awareness raising of rights and entitlements
  • Emotional support to recover from abuse

We have also developed positive relationships with statutory and voluntary organisations, which have resulted in new alliances that have been successful in securing grants from Ministry of Justice, Devon County Council, Office of Police and Crime Commissioner, Comic Relief and Postcode Lottery.

We are proud of the achievements we have made over the last two years and hope to continue to make positive changes in the lives of victims and survivors.

About the role

We have recently undergone an internal audit and have identified that we can make improvements in terms of our financial resilience. To that end we would like to recruit an experienced accountant to support us with the following:

  • Support The Olive Project to develop the right financial measures, records, controls and procedures to ensure legal and regulatory compliance as well as financial health of the charity

This will include:

  • Support the CEO to develop proper record-keeping on a day to day basis.
  • Support the CEO to develop balance sheets and budgets for grants.
  • Support the CEO to develop quarterly management accounts
  • Review the effectiveness of our financial policies including a reserves policy and recommend changes if necessary.
  • Advise the CEO and trustee committee on future strategic resourcing to ensure financial sustainability.

Our ideal candidate

  • Qualified accountant with demonstrated awareness and knowledge of charity financial regulations and legal requirements
  • Competent use of IT skills.
  • Ability to work in a 1-2-1 setting
  • Proven ability to communicate and explain financial information to members of the Board and other stakeholders.
  • Dedicated to the organisation’s cause and objectives

Due to the sensitive nature of our work a DBS check will be required. The cost will be covered by The Olive Project. A criminal record will not lead to an automatic exception from the role.

What’s in it for you

You will be making a difference in people’s lives. You will support us to continuously provide life saving support services that enable people to live free from abuse and harm.

We can offer free spaces at our training events that look at anti-oppressive and culturally competent practice and there will be opportunities to attend networking events within the local community.

We hope you will find it a rewarding experience sharing your financial expertise with us
