About the organisation

The Movements Trust (TMT) is a start-up regranter and fiscal sponsor*, moving funds into movements and activism in the UK and overseas. We're expanding rapidly, with our services in great demand. We need strong trustees to help us shape our strategy and oversee our grant making. In particular we need a Treasurer to work with the team to ensure good fiscal management and grant diligence and to support our fundraising plans.

About the role

As a Trustee of TMT the Treasurer shares responsibility for discharging the board's duties. In addition, the role involves the specific tasks listed below:

  • Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities, guiding and advising on approval of the charity’s budgets, accounts and financial statements.
  • Advising on the financial implications of strategic plans and key assumptions in the operational plan and annual budget

With the Executive Director and TMT’s accountant:

  • Monitoring income, expenditure and variances against budget, and presenting reports to the board on a quarterly basis.
  • Ensuring that all board members have a clear understanding of the accounts presented at meetings and the implications that they reveal
  • Presenting the annual accounts at the AGM, drawing attention to important points in a coherent and understandable way.
  • Ensuring that accounts are prepared at year-end in compliance with the SORP Accounting for Charities and making arrangements for them to be audited or independently examined, as required by the Charity Commission.
  • Working with the ED to ensure that annual accounts are submitted to the Charity Commission and Companies House, within the deadlines set.
  • Understanding the accounting procedures and key internal controls to be able to assure the board that the charity's financial integrity is sound, and that the Finance Policy is reviewed annually accordingly, to ensure proper financial procedures and controls are in place to safeguard the charity's resources.
  • Ensuring that a realistic budget is produced which meets the charity's needs, and that there is an appropriate reserves policy which is adhered to.

With the Chair and ED:

  • Ensuring that money received is only spent on the purposes for which it was given, in accordance with the banking controls and authorisations set out in the Finance Policy

Our ideal candidate

  • Able to commit to a monthly accounting meeting with the ED and accountant, in addition to the monthly Board meeting and the Annual General Meeting
  • Financial qualifications or equivalent relevant experience
  • Some experience or knowledge of charity finance
  • The skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to present complex information to nonfinancial experts
  • Good negotiation and influencing skills
  • Willingness to be available to staff to provide advice and guidance on financial matters.

What’s in it for you

As a new and small charity, The Movement's Trust is agile and aiming to grow fast. We started operations in 2022, and have grown to a team of five remote staff and a Board of six trustees.

Our trustees are hands on, and engaged in our movement work, our income plan and growth, and guide our long term strategy. In 2026-2027, we are anticipating that the trustees will support plans to grow and expand the organization to keep pace with demand, and will review and develop the strategy and governance structures that will work for a growing organization.
