About the organisation

Talitha Arts delivers therapeutic arts workshops to support vulnerable adults, communities and children, including refugees, victims of sex-trafficking and abuse. We also help people with mental-health needs, and people whose neurological condition impacts negatively on their self-esteem, e.g. dementia.

Our work aims to restore hope, renew dignity and build self-worth to some of the most vulnerable in the community, through the power of creative arts expression to deliver our mission: Talitha Arts exists to serve individuals who are considered vulnerable by bringing restoration, and transformation to their lives through expressive creative arts workshops. We aim to be person-centered, courageous, and creative.

2023 was a break-through year for Talitha Arts, achieving significant exposure though its presence and award-winning garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, and delivering more programmes with more strategic partners than ever before. We are in an exciting period of growth and are looking for an experienced accountant to join our Trustee team and help this organisation to flourish.

About the role

Talitha Arts currently has 7 trustees on its Board. Trustees are encouraged to serve two three-year terms of service. The Treasurer is nearing the end of his two terms of service and so we are looking to find a suitable replacement for him in 2024. The Board meets four times a year - twice in East London and twice online.

The charity is small, and so the current Treasurer has in some respects been serving as a 'Finance Director' for the organisation, working closely with the Executive Director to review the financial position and performance of the charity on a monthly basis, and to supervise the annual planning and budgeting.

The charity has a book-keeper who has supported us very well for a few years, and who prepares a set of management accounts each month which are then reviewed in a monthly Zoom call with the book-keeper, Executive Director and Treasurer. Accounting is undertaken by the book-keeper using Xero. We also have an accountant, a charity accounting specialist, who undertakes the independent examination and prepares the statutory accounts.

The Treasurer is also a member of the Governance Sub-Committee of the Board, set up to oversee the governance aspects of the charity, ensuring that the four annual Board meetings are well planned and run, and making sure that the charity meets its statutory obligations. The-Sub-Committee meets online once a month.

As a Trustee the Treasurer will be required to help ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations, and that it pursues its objects as defined in its governing document.

Our ideal candidate

The ideal candidate will have the following attributes:

  • an accounting qualification, ideally with some experience in non-profits / charities
  • excellent interpersonal and teamworking skills
  • experience in helping small organisations to grow
  • a passion for supporting victims of trauma and trafficking, and the vulnerable
  • an appreciation of the Christian faith and Christian ethos of the organisation
  • prior experience as a treasurer and/or as a charity trustee would be advantageous but not essential

What’s in it for you

This is a terrific role for the right individual.

We have a dynamic and motivated staff who are delivering life-changing programmes for hundreds of individuals each year, we have a new fundraiser who has just joined the team, and we have made a great start to 2024 with some significant grant awards. We are supported by a host of well known names from the acting profession and creative arts, and we are poised to grow the organisation, bringing stability and structure to safeguard its future and ensure it is well placed to deliver on its mission in the years to come.

You will be making a difference, bringing your skills and experience to bear in an organisation which is small but which has demonstrated its ability to punch well above its weight.
