About the organisation

We are the Parochial Church Council (PCC) of St Michael & All Angels, Abbey Wood.  We are the Church of England parish church for Abbey Wood, a church right at the south eastern end of the Elizabeth Line.

The PCC has the responsibility of co-operating with the vicar in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish, the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. The PCC is also specifically responsible for the maintenance of the church.  The PCC is committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship with us.  As part of our general public benefit, we provide a place and space for spiritual refreshment and nourishment of the soul: regardless of denomination or even faith, the opportunity for reflection is a basic human characteristic and we are proud to be of service to all in this way.

Our Church Treasurer became ill in May 2025, we do not know when, or even if, she might return. Church treasurers are often doing their job as an extension of their Christian discipleship and commitment, and so there is quite a lot that a Church Treasurer does.  At the moment we are not trying to find a new treasurer, but instead someone who can help us with our immediate needs.

We acknowledge that as trustees the responsibility is ours’ but we need some help with some specialist tasks.

About the role

We will:

count the collection at the end of services and pay the result into the bank;

receive invoices and bills and pay them;

advertise in our church magazine and on our church noticeboard, asking for someone with financial skills to come forward to work with our new volunteer.

This role will be reporting to Father David Sherratt, the Vicar.

We would like someone to:

oversee bank account reconciliations;

produce a simple finance statement for PCC meetings (of which there are six a year);

produce the annual accounts ready for the PCC and the Independent Examiner;

complete the necessary returns for HMRC so that we can reclaim GiftAid;

advise the PCC on money it has available and how much it needs for its current and future operations;

produce a budget.

We will not need you to visit regularly, but we would probably like to meet you every now and again.  We are well used to emailing.

Our ideal candidate

Ready to communicate with us to help us learn what we need to do;

Used to financial reporting and recording;

Able to develop your own systems which can be easily understood by others;

Good with attention to detail;

Able to use a spreadsheet such as Microsoft Excel;

Experienced in book-keeping and accounting;

Able to learn about, or already experienced with, charity and church accounting.

What’s in it for you

This is an opportunity for you to help a church who need skills and who appreciate those who bring them, a chance to develop an understanding of church and charity accounting in a smaller organization, a role which will enable you to develop communication with those who are not well-versed in financial matters but who are open to learning and a rewarding role in supporting a smaller church to focus on what really matters financially so we are not worried about the things which are not important.
