About the organisation

The award-winning Spear Programme helps 16-24-year-olds facing barriers to work overcome the challenges they are facing to find and succeed in sustainable employment. The initial programme runs for six weeks, with a year of support for each participant to ensure long-term success.

Spear Islington is for 16-24-year-olds who face different challenges and are not in education, employment or training (NEET). It offers young people in Islington and the local area the opportunity to challenge their mindset and improve their work readiness. It enables them to kick start their career and find long-term employment. It involves:

  • Coaching to overcome barriers & challenge attitudes and behaviours.
  • Practical training such as writing a good CV and mock interview practice.
  • A year of support for each candidate to help them find a job and succeed in work.

Spear Islington works with up to 90 young people each year. The majority are referred by one of our partners – local job centres, youth offending teams, social services, and other local council representatives.

About the role

The Treasurer is a member of the Spear Islington Board of Trustees with particular responsibility for providing oversight and assurance on the charity’s financial health. Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Production of financial statements for board meetings (actual cashflow against budget)
  • Preparation of annual budgets for board approval
  • Preparation of annual accounts and managing external review
  • Reconciliation of bank transactions to corresponding records
  • Review/approve/instruct changes related to (outsourced) payroll
  • Payment of supplier invoices where required

The estimated time commitment for the role is 1-2 days per month.

Our ideal candidate

We are looking for a Treasurer who would enjoy using their financial skills to support an organisation that is making a real difference to young people’s lives. This role would suit a finance professional who is curious about the charity sector and keen to step into their first (or early) trustee role in a supportive, well-run environment. We are very happy to support someone who is new to trusteeship.

Most of the role can be carried out remotely, but we would love the Treasurer to visit us occasionally, meet the team and see our work in action. Understanding how and why we operate makes the financial side more meaningful and rewarding.

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA equivalent)
  • Confident and clear communicator of financial information
  • Enjoys working as part of a team
  • Commitment to the Charity’s cause
  • Highly organised and with strong time management

What’s in it for you

  • Be part of a charity making a genuine difference in the lives of young people
  • Opportunity to hone your financial skills in a leadership role
  • Be part of a highly experienced, talented and kind Trustee Group
