About the organisation

The award-winning Spear Programme helps 16-24-year-olds facing barriers to work overcome the challenges they are facing to find and succeed in sustainable employment. The initial programme runs for six weeks, with a year of support for each participant to ensure long-term success.

Spear Islington is for 16-24-year-olds who face different challenges and are not in education, employment or training (NEET). It offers young people in Islington and the local area the opportunity to challenge their mindset and improve their work readiness. It enables them to kick start their career and find long-term employment. It involves:

  • Coaching to overcome barriers & challenge attitudes and behaviours.

  • Practical training such as writing a good CV and mock interview practice.

  • A year of support for each candidate to help them find a job and succeed in work.

Spear Islington works with up to 90 young people each year. The majority are referred by one of our partners – local job centres, youth offending teams, social services, and other local council representatives.

About the role

The Treasurer is a member of the Spear Islington Board of Trustees with particular responsibility for providing oversight and assurance on the charity’s financial health. The charity has established strong financial systems and processes, supported by a dedicated bookkeeper, providing a solid foundation for the Treasurer to focus on oversight and continuous improvement.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Provide oversight of the charity’s financial position, ensuring the Board has clear visibility of financial performance, risks, and opportunities

  • Review and interpret financial information (including cashflow and management accounts), supporting effective decision-making by the Board

  • Oversee the preparation of financial reports for Trustee meetings, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and relevance

  • Lead the budgeting process, working with relevant stakeholders to develop and monitor annual budgets and forecasts

  • Oversee the preparation of annual accounts and liaise with external reviewers/auditors as required

  • Provide oversight of financial controls and processes, ensuring appropriate governance and risk management is in place

  • Oversee the charity’s banking, payments, and financial operations, ensuring appropriate approvals and controls are maintained

  • Act as the primary point of contact and provide light-touch support and guidance to the bookkeeper, ensuring financial tasks are completed accurately and on time

  • Ensure compliance with      statutory and regulatory financial requirements (e.g. Charity Commission, HMRC)

  • Support the Chair and Trustees in maintaining strong financial governance and long-term financial sustainability

  • Contribute to the ongoing  development and optimisation of financial processes, including identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and strengthen delegation where appropriate

The estimated time commitment for the role is 1-2 days per month.

Our ideal candidate

We are looking for a Treasurer who will bring sound financial judgement and a pragmatic, governance-focused approach to supporting the charity’s work. This role would suit a finance professional who is comfortable stepping back from day-to-day delivery to focus on governance, risk, and strategic decision-making.

You may be an experienced finance professional or someone looking to take on their first Treasurer role, but you should be confident interpreting financial information, asking the right questions, and providing constructive challenge where needed.

We are particularly interested in someone who:

  • Is a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent), or has equivalent relevant financial experience

  • Can clearly communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders

  • Brings a governance-focused approach, with the ability to oversee financial activities and ensure appropriate controls are in place

  • Has strong attention to detail alongside the ability to see the bigger picture

  • Is collaborative, reliable, and able to commit the time needed to fulfil the role effectively

  • Has an interest in supporting a charity making a meaningful impact in the lives of young people

Most of the role can be carried out remotely, but we would love the Treasurer to engage with the organisation where possible, meet the team, and see the impact of the work first-hand.

What’s in it for you

  • Be part of a charity making a genuine and lasting difference in the lives of young people

  • Apply your financial expertise in a strategic, trustee-level role

  • Opportunity to shape and enhance financial processes within a well-structured and evolving operating model

  • Gain experience of charity governance within a supportive and collaborative Board
