About the organisation

Smallwood Trust is a specialist grant-maker focused on enabling women to be financially resilient and reducing gendered poverty in the UK. Since 2016, we’ve awarded over £26 million in grants and work across individual hardship funding, community-led partnerships, and systems change initiatives.

About the role

We are now seeking a new Chair of our Finance, Audit and Risk Committee – a key governance role overseeing financial strategy, controls and sustainability at Board level.

This is an opportunity for an experienced financial leader to join a values-led, well-governed charity at a meaningful stage of its development. The Chair will work closely with the Chief Executive and fellow trustees to ensure effective oversight, risk management, and decision-making. Beyond technical oversight, we are looking for someone who can engage the Board in thoughtful, strategic conversations about financial health, long-term planning and asset management.

A recognised financial qualification (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) is essential, and we would particularly welcome interest from candidates who bring experience of endowed organisations or the management of assets.

Time commitment: 1 day per month.

Our ideal candidate

You’ll bring:
• Proven senior-level financial leadership, with the ability to guide the Board through complex decisions
• Experience chairing or actively contributing to a Finance, Audit or Risk Committee
• An understanding of financial governance and risk management in a charity context
• The ability to support and challenge constructively, and act as a strategic sounding board to the executive team
• Independent judgement, integrity, and a genuine commitment to Smallwood’s mission and values

At Smallwood Trust, we are committed to building a diverse board that brings a rich mix of perspectives to our work. We are particularly keen to broaden representation across disability, gender – including encouraging more men to consider these roles – and age, by welcoming younger trustees who are earlier in their governance journeys. We see real value in different lived experiences, career stages and backgrounds helping to shape our strategy and challenge our thinking.

What’s in it for you

Smallwood offers a supportive and inclusive environment, with a board culture that values learning, collaboration and thoughtful debate. If you have specific support needs or adjustments that would help you participate fully in the process or in the role itself, we would be very happy to discuss these with you.

This is a key role in helping Smallwood remain financially resilient, accountable and focused on delivering meaningful impact for women most affected by poverty and inequality.
