About the organisation
Sheffield Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus -SHASBAH is a registered charity that supports people with the conditions of Spina Bifida and/or hydrocephalus and their families within the Sheffield postcodes. SHASBAH was formed in 1964 as more children were living with the conditions due to treatment at Sheffield's Children Hospital. Spina bifida is a spinal condition which develops before birth. It causes nerve damage, continence difficulties and mobility problems throughout life. It can also lead to Hydrocephalus which is the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. The excess CSF increases the size of the ventricles or cavities in the brain leading to pressure on the brain causing a range of lifelong challenges and need for medical support. SHASBAH provides regular events for members and their carers to come together and spend time with others in similar circumstances. We offer befriending and tailored support to individuals. We introduce them to our community of peer to peer support helping to provide a network of understanding and advice for members and their families. We host accessible and inclusive social events and groups to reduce isolation while building confidence and independence skills. Give specialist advice in areas such as care, treatment, education and housing, and provide small-scale financial aid for specific needs.
