About the organisation

Reading Mencap supports people with learning disabilities and their families to live life to the fullest. We run a range of services to help people with learning disabilities in Reading stay active, healthy and independent.

 

Key services include:

 

  • 4ME Day Activities Service for adults with a learning disability running Monday to Friday
  • Family Support: Free information, advice and practical support for individuals and families
  • Energy project to provide safety advice
  • Information, advice, carer’s assessments and emergency planning for unpaid family carers
  • Social and leisure groups for adults with a learning disability.

We are affliated to national Mencap but we are a stand-alone charity and receive no funding from them. All funds needed to run our services are raised by us.

About the role

We are looking for a new Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees and help us manage our finances.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing income and expenditure
  • Supporting the preparation and monitoring of the annual budget
  • Ensuring the charity operates within its means and plans ahead financially
  • Oversee day-to-day financial matters, including income, spending and bank balances
  • Review simple financial reports and help other Trustees understand the charity's fiancial position
  • Work with an independent examiner or accountant where required
  • Help ensure financial records are accurate and appropriately maintained
  • Take part fully in Board discussions and decision making.

Board meetings are held 4 – 6 times a year and there will also be a requirement to review finances or provide advice when needed.

Our ideal candidate

You will have experience of managing finances, budgets or accounts. We are looking for someone who is happy to take a hands-on approach and who enjoys working as part of a small team. You will work closely with the Bookkeeper, other Trustees and staff involved in day-to-day finances.
