About the organisation

PFP’s vision is of empowered, healthy, prosperous communities across the world. We focus on sustainable development in Kenya and Uganda, initiating and delivering programmes that improve health and nutrition, increase access to quality education, promote gender equality and create livelihoods. We aim to increase household and community income, build the resilience and capability of the communities we serve and reduce their dependence on charitable support through our “handshakes not handouts” partnerships. The backbone of our projects is clean technologies, which provide first-time access to electricity for households, healthcare and education settings; clean water and irrigation; smokeless cooking; sanitation; education; and sustainable livelihoods.

About the role

We are looking for short-term support in preparing our accounts for independent examination and in reviewing and supporting the CEO to implement appropriate accounting systems.

We currently use Excel to manage our finances, but as we grow as an organisation and have more complex finances with multiple restricted and designated funds, we need to implement a software-based solution. Our CEO and Treasurer have a good understanding of charity finances from an operational/management perspective but we do not have specific accountancy expertise and would value some skilled volunteering support here. As a small team, we are also looking for a volunteer who is willing to be hands-on in this role.

We anticipate that it would be a short-term project to be completed before the end of April 2023. If you would like to continue your involvement after the project, there are lots of ways to do this including longer-term volunteering, joining one of our sub-committees or becoming a Trustee.

Our ideal candidate

- Experience in implementing accounting systems (ideally in a charity context including accounting for multiple restricted and unrestricted income streams)

- Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, charity finance requirements including the Charity SORP

- Experience in preparing annual accounts ready for independent examination

What’s in it for you

Our volunteers tell us that they love making a real difference through applying their skills and networks to support and develop our work. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to a growing charity at a time of change and consolidation.

Through volunteering your skills, you will help strengthen our financial management and governance, which will in turn help us to be accountable and transparent to our stakeholders and to attract further funds and support for our work. This will support our ambition to increase our impact three-fold by the end of 2025 - ensuring more households and communities have access to food and water, health, education and livelihoods.
