About the organisation
The Plus Importance Project is a charity that improves understanding and inclusion of people in the + of LGBT+, defined as “sexualities, gender identities, relationship orientations and sex characteristics including, but not limited to, asexual, genderfluid, genderqueer, intersex, non-binary, pansexual, polyamorous and queer”.
As the UK’s first registered charity with a focus on the + of LGBT+, we aim to create a world where those who identify fully or partly in the + of LGBT+ experience equal rights, respect and representation.
We do this by:
1) Training and supporting organisations
We work with organisations to help them be more + inclusive. This includes running training sessions and providing a review service that identifies areas for improvement in an organisation’s policies, forms, web content etc.
2) Improving public awareness of identities in the +
This includes social media, appearances at events, media appearances/interactions and responding to public consultations.
3) Undertaking research
This includes conducting, collating and commissioning research on different identities and the experiences of people in the + of LGBT+.
4) Campaigning for the rights of people in the +
This includes responding to government consultations and meeting with MPs and other decision-makers.
About the role
As Treasurer, you will keep track of the finances of the charity, ensure the organisation is financially sustainable and develop the charity’s operations and policies relating to finance. You will also share your expertise in this area with the other trustees to help them make informed decisions.
Additionally as a trustee, you will help ensure the charity delivers on its vision and keeps to its values. The Board of Trustees are both jointly and individually responsible for the governance and strategic direction of the charity, its financial health and its activities in accordance with our governing documents and legal and regulatory guidelines.
This role requires a time commitment averaging 2 hours per week, including attendance at Board of Trustee meetings (roughly every 6 weeks online) and other ad-hoc meetings. We would generally expect a time commitment of at least two years where possible.
Responsibilities:
- Ensuring the charity complies with its governing document, charity law and other relevant legislation and regulations
- Ensuring the charity is financially sustainable in both the short-term and long-term and does not spend money on activities that are not part of its charitable objects
- Contributing to the strategic direction of the charity, setting overall policy, defining targets and evaluating performance
- Safeguarding the good name and values of the charity and managing risks
- Approving and processing financial transactions
- Making sure the charity keeps proper accounts
- Ensuring the charity has robust and effective financial controls
- Reviewing the charity’s financial performance and reporting on financial matters when required
- Supporting income generation such as grant applications
- Supporting the wider work of the Plus Importance Project
Our ideal candidate
Ideally we are looking for an experienced treasurer who would be able to scruitinise and improve our current financial processes, and support us as we grow our income with the aim to hopefully hire staff in the near future.
Essential:
- Experience and knowledge of finance/accounting
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to scrutinise financial budgets and processes
- Passion for the work of the charity
- Personal or professional interest in the work of the Plus Importance Project
- Able to offer at least 2 hours per week
Preferable:
- Experience of being a charity trustee or a similar role overseeing the management and administration of an organisation
- Experience and knowledge of charity finance and fundraising
- Ability to help the charity grow financially
- Ability to help the charity transition from volunteer-led to a staff team
We particularly welcome applications from people that have lived experience that is currently underrepresented on our Board of Trustees, such as people who are Black or intersex.
What’s in it for you
As a relatively new charity, you will have a significant impact on ensuring the charity continues to grow in a sustainable manner. We strongly hope to secure the funding needing to start building a staff team and so you will be pivotal in enabling that to happen and ensuring the charity has more capacity to have a much larger impact across the country. As the UK's first registered charity focused on the + of LGBT+, we bring together, represent and advocate for a community of people who are often misunderstood, ignored and discriminated against.
We provide training to new volunteers to ensure they have a strong knowledge of identities in the + of LGBT+ and there are many opportunities to get involved in the wider work of the charity if that would be of interest, from helping us raise awareness on our stalls at events throughout the year, to supporting our advocacy work in campaigning for equal rights and representation.
