About the organisation

Plant Listening provides inspiring ecological education that reclaims a universal culture of environmental stewardship. We do this through creating events that build and revive time-honoured practical skills that serve modern life and facilitate a sense of confidence and kinship amongst diverse communities. The diverse communities we serve benefit by:

- Increasing access to natural spaces for communities, particularly those living in urban environments

- Improving understanding of the natural world and the medicinal and nutritional benefits local natural food and medicine.

- Increasing a culture of care and responsibility for local natural environments.

- Reviving the practical skills of tracking and foraging so that they can help support modern life by refocussing attention and building confidence through a richer ecological understanding.

- Increasing personal and communal wellbeing and resilience.

- Decreasing stress, fatigue, depression and isolation through spending nourishing, guided time in the natural world.

We work with a number of different organisations in Scotland that support marginalised and vulnerable communities, with a specific focus on asylum-seekers and refugees, creating events that give these groups meaningful and restorative time in the natural world. Examples of the organisations we work with are: Carr Gomm, DeafBlind, Maggie's Cancer Centres, Paths for All, Versus Arthritis, CWIN (Central West Integration Network), The Depot (Dumfries and Galloway Refugee Network), The Welcoming, and Freedom from Torture. In 2027 we plan to focus our efforts on developing a programme called Rural Pathways for Refugees, creating opportunities for employment in rural areas across South West and West Scotland.
