About the organisation
Number Champions is a children’s education charity supporting primary school pupils who are struggling with maths. We work with state schools across London to help children in Years 2 and 3 build confidence, resilience and core numeracy skills through weekly one-to-one support sessions with trained volunteers.
We are a collaborative, supportive and community-focused charity. We value patience, encouragement and consistency, and we believe small interventions can make a lasting difference to a child’s confidence and educational journey. We support children from a wide range of backgrounds including many disadvantaged pupils.
About the role
Volunteers work individually with up to three children during the school day (usually an afternoon), using games and structured activities to help make maths feel accessible and enjoyable.
This is a rewarding opportunity to make a direct difference to a child’s confidence in maths and help them develop their skills.

- 4 hour in-person induction training at Kings Cross venue
- ongoing support from a mentor (current or former primary school teacher)
- volunteer kit containg teaching resources and activity materials
- online resources to support sessions
- regular contact and support from the Number Champions team
Volunteers typically support children:
- in weekly one-to-one sessions of 30 minutes per child (supporting up to 3 children)
- during school afternoons
- across the academic year
The role requires an Enhanced DBS check, which will be arranged and paid for by Number Champions as part of the recruitment process

What’s in it for you
This is a rewarding opportunity to make a direct difference to a child’s confidence and educational experience. Volunteers build valuable relationships with the young people they support. For volunteers who loved maths themselves as a child, this is a wonderful opportunity to share their enthusiasm for the subject with children and bring maths to life!
The impact our volunteers make is evidenced by our end-of-year data which is taken from our teacher survey:
86% - The child now enjoys maths more than they did
88% - The child's confidence in mathshasimproved
80% - The child is more engaged in maths lessons
80% - The child is less anxious about maths
84% - The child's maths skills have improved
"Hearing from the kids how confident they had become and seeing how much they enjoyed the sessions. It was so rewarding." Volunteer A
