About the organisation
Natural Neighbours boosts the health and wellbeing of city dwellers by connecting them with nature in their everyday lives where they live, work, learn and play. We do this by connecting, inspiring, and supporting urban communities, especially those most marginalised, to take accessible and effective actions in support of human-friendly wildlife. As local wildlife populations flourish, so too do their human neighbours.
We work with institutions like schools and community groups like estate TRAs to help local residents create and improve wildlife habitat in central 'hub' sites like playgrounds and estate communal lawns. In the process we inspire, skill and equip them to make similar creations and improvements in their personal and private outdoor spaces at home or work.
With our pioneering interactive map and app, we show how people can collaborate in supporting health-giving urban wildlife and share in its enjoyment, together and apart, wherever they are.
About the role
We are looking for a qualified accountant with a passion for people and the planet to join our team ideally as a trustee or otherwise as a volunteer. When you join Natural Neighbours you will help both with the specifics of compiling accounts, forecasts and reports, and in the bigger picture strategic aspects of planning the charity's approach to managing income and expenditure in accordance with our mission, vision and values.
As one of our trustees you would be expected to join the quarterly board meetings where you would be welcomed, valued and supported by our warm and diverse team. We would also value your practical help and advice supporting the director and other trustees and team members as appropriate with ad hoc and routine accounting and financial management and related tasks.
As a relatively small team of (currently) six trustees governing a relatively young organisation we do not yet have sub-committees dedicated to specific issue areas but we anticipate developing this specialisation and would look to you both to assume a role of chairing and/or leading in areas of finance and accounting and to delineate the tasks and responsiblities that we as a well-run charity should be delivering.
As an expert volunteering their time we would of course work around your schedule and availability, including meeting with you on evenings and weekends if that suited you best.
Our ideal candidate
Our ideal candidate has experience in financial management and accounting and a passion for the public good, ideally with an interest in the environment and nature-derived health and wellbeing. You’ll be known for your strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial record-keeping, comfortable working both collaboratively and on your own steam. You need to be a qualified accountant, perhaps still working, perhaps recently retired. You might have experience working in the charity sector and/or on community and environmental causes, but that’s not essential. Your interest, enthusiasm and experience are the most important things.
What’s in it for you
This is an exciting time to join us, a new charity with a groundbreaking approach to engaging urban communities in addressing environmental and social injustices. You'll be highly valued as a key part of our diverse, energetic and passionate team. You'll enjoy shaping how we work and being a part of our story as we establish and grow our impact. The experience you gain along the way will be a valuable part of your CV, make you new friends for life, and be full of surprsing insights and revelations.
