The Maya Centre is a community-based charity in Islington, London providing free mental health and wellbeing services to women on low incomes with experiences of depression, anxiety and violence against women and girls (VAWG).
Our mission is to build a safe and inclusive women-for-women community in which we:
Support recovery from depression, trauma and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) with a focus on building trust, resilience and voice.
Flex to meet women’s different needs by offering therapy, as individuals, in groups, face-to-face or remotely.
Prioritise intercultural and intersectional approaches via tailored and targeted support in community languages and for specific, minoritised cultural groups.
Seek to influence best practice in women’s mental health and wellbeing across our local community.
About the role
Key Responsibilities:
Chairing the Finance Committee. Working with the Finance Committee, being assured that the financial resources of the organisation meet its present and future needs by reviewing the proposed annual budget, management accounts, performance against budget, cashflow position etc. and advising and guiding the Board accordingly.
Working with management, ensuring that funding received for specific purposes is separately accounted for and spent for the purposes for which it was given; and ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.
Identifying and bringing to the attention of the Board, any key financial risks facing the charity.
Contributing to the fundraising strategy of the organisation.
Advising the board on the reserves policy, and ensuring that this policy is reviewed and monitored regularly.
Making a formal presentation of the accounts at the annual general meeting and drawing attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way.
To assist the Chair and the Chief Executive:
Ensuring that the Board of Trustees fulfils its duties and responsibilities for the proper financial governance of the charity.
Keeping the Board informed of its financial duties and responsibilities.
Advising, in consultation with the Chair, the Chief Executive on the level, quantity and frequency of financial information and reporting required by the board to allow the board to fulfil its legal and statutory responsibilities.

Financial experience (required)
Financial qualifications (preferable)
Some experience of charity finance, fundraising and pension schemes (preferable)
The skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences (required)
Being prepared to make unpopular recommendations to the board (required)
A willingness to be available to staff for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis (required)
