About the organisation
Make 2nds Count is a charity giving hope to people across the UK affected by secondary breast cancer.
Secondary breast cancer takes the lives of 1000 people each month in the UK yet it is little understood and support is insufficient. Secondary breast cancer occurs when cancer cells spread from the breast to other parts of the body such as the brain and lungs; once there symptoms might be managed but cannot be cured. It's estimated that 61,000 people are living with secondary breast cancer in the UK, with a median life expectancy of 2-3 years.
We give hope in the following ways:
1. Support and fund research into secondary breast cancer. Currently ony 7% of research funding into breast cancer is for secondary - we think that's wrong.
2. We educate the public about secondary breast cancer (particularly signs and symptoms).
3. We provide support to those affected by secondary breast cancer via local support groups, retreats, and a patient summit.
About the role
The Treasurer is a trustee role who will lead the Board in seeking assurance, and provide scrutiny, of our financial processes, results, planning, and management. This is not an executive role so the treasurer won't be 'doing ' the finances but being assured that the charity is well governed, effective, and spending money within the bounds of its charitable objectives. It is also hoped that they would provide a link to the finance team and CEO.
As a trustee it's expected that this person will ensure that the charity has a strategic purpose, and is well-governed; they would be expected to be a strong and effective ambassador for the charity.
