About the organisation

King George and Queen’s Hospitals Charity raises funds to make a real difference to patients, staff and families at both King George Hospital in Ilford and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We are the official charity of Barking, Havering, and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) and we’re embarking on an exciting new path with the ambition to make an even bigger difference to the health and wellbeing of our communities.

The charity has recently become an independent NHS charity with its own Board – while still working in close partnership with BHRUT and the NHS in North-East London.

The charity’s role is to fund projects that go beyond NHS funding to further enhance the hospital experience for all. The charity listens to the concerns, ideas and innovations of patients and staff and raises funds to help turn their great ideas into reality - making the hospital journey even better.

To be able to fund projects, we fundraise in different ways, organising events, challenges, and campaigns that inspire our community to come together and make a positive impact. We rely on the generosity of people and organisations to make our work possible - every donation counts and helps us improve the health and wellbeing of those going through challenging times.

About the role

This is a pivotal moment for King George & Queen’s Hospitals Charity. As Finance Trustee you will provide financial leadership, strengthen governance, and help ensure every pound raised delivers maximum impact.

You'll work with the Chair and interim CEO of the newly independent Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). You will support the charity’s staff and partners to shape and deliver a bright future, building on the best of the current charity. You will contribute to effective governance and leadership, ensuring the charity sets an ambitious strategy, achieves its goals, operates within the legal framework, and adheres to the charity's mission and values, as outlined in the Charity Governance Code.

Our ideal candidate

Who we’re looking for:

• Strong financial background (charity or NHS experience welcome)

• Strategic thinker with sound governance judgement

• Values-led, collaborative and motivated by community impact

What you'll do:

• Chair the Finance Committee and oversee financial strategy

• Ensure strong financial controls, sustainability and compliance

• Approve budgets and monitor financial performance

• Work closely with the Chair and CEO during a period of growth

• Act as an ambassador and support fundraising activity

What’s in it for you

This voluntary role will involve establishing and chairing the Finance Committee and playing a key role in overseeing the Foundation’s financial strategy and governance, working closely with the CEO and Chair.

The Board is seeking someone with financial experience, ideally with exposure to charity or NHS finance, who is passionate about making a difference for the benefit of the patients, staff and wider community of Barking, Havering, and Redbridge, Romford and Ilford.

This new phase is an exciting and crucial time for the charity. With our new autonomy, you can be a part of our journey to set an ambitious strategy and maximise fundraising and impact while honing your financial leadership skills.
