Founded in 2009, our mission is to transform children’s lives, empower communities and reduce poverty throughout Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. We do this by meeting children’s and families’ immediate needs and strengthening their futures through child protection, access to education and family strengthening.

From its foundation, Kids Club Kampala has been community-led and community-driven, responding to the needs of communities in a sustainable way. The UK charity works in partnership with committed in-country partners, who passionately lead and implement projects which are a lifeline to children living in some of the most challenging environments in the world.

Over the last 17 years our achievements have included:

About the role

The role of the Treasurer is to oversee the financial health of the charity and ensure the financial literacy of the organisation at Board level. Working closely with the Head of Finance and the CEO, the Treasurer will advise on all financial matters including regulatory compliance. They will lead the Board of Trustees on financial strategy, planning, risk management and reporting.

We want to help as many children and families in need across East Africa as possible and aren’t afraid to be ambitious in what we aim to achieve. With an annual income of £1.7 million in 2025 and now working across 3 East African countries, we are looking for committed trustees to help guide the organisation in this new phase. The organization is in good financial shape, and we have a committed and hardworking team. However, current global economic shocks, cost-of-living challenges and exchange rate fluctuations are risks and causes for concern. We know this will require ongoing adaptability, resourcefulness, and creativity to face these challenges ahead.

The Treasurer will play an important role in informing and shaping our strategy in this area, and guiding the organization to succeed. This is a great opportunity to make your mark with a charity that has ambitious plans to scale up further to ensure that vulnerable children across East Africa have the opportunity to both survive and to thrive.

The role includes preparation and follow up for trustee meetings, and contributing to work between meetings by participating in finance sub-committee or working group meetings, or by using your professional skills to help advance the aims of the organization. This may also include ad-hoc meetings with the Head of Finance and the CEO to discuss the financial performance and management of the organisation, as required.

Trustees meet as a Board 5-6 times per year, with the vast majority of these meetings taking place virtually. Trustee meetings are approximately 2 hours long and generally take place on a Monday evening. Once a year the trustees meet in person for strategy planning, generally in the autumn, which is a whole day meeting and tends to take place on a weekend in the Midlands. Finance sub-committee meetings are held additionally to this in advance of the trustee meetings, these are also held virtually, approximately 5-6 times a year.

The Treasurer will be appointed to serve for a fixed term which is normally 3 years. When the term expiries, the Treasurer will have the option to stand again for re-election if they choose to. All trustees including the Treasurer can serve a maximum of 3 consecutive terms (9 years in total).

Our ideal candidate

We are looking for a Treasurer who combines strong financial expertise with a genuine passion for making a difference to vulnerable children and families.

Essential experience and qualities

The successful candidate will have professional accountancy experience, ideally within a charity or voluntary sector setting, with a good understanding of audits, budgeting and financial reporting. They will be able to think strategically and provide sound, independent judgement, while also paying close attention to detail and ensuring good financial governance.

Excellent communication skills are essential. Our Treasurer will need to be confident translating and explaining financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues, Trustees and other stakeholders, and using their expertise to support informed decision-making at Board level.

We are looking for someone who is organised, self-motivated and able to work effectively remotely. They will be a collaborative team player, with the energy, flexibility and commitment to give the time required to fulfil the role effectively. They should be able to think creatively and innovatively, while demonstrating impartiality, fairness and discretion.

The successful candidate will understand the duties and responsibilities of charity trustees and be committed to our vision, values and ethos. Most importantly, they will share our passion for improving the lives of vulnerable children and families.

Desirable experience and knowledge

It would be advantageous to have experience using Xero, a good understanding of the Charities SORP, and knowledge of the voluntary sector. Previous experience as a charity Treasurer or Trustee would be particularly valuable.

We would also welcome candidates with experience or an interest in international development, fundraising or supporting vulnerable children and young people. Knowledge and understanding of Ugandan culture, customs and communities would be beneficial, as would management experience in the public, private or voluntary sector.

We are particularly keen to hear from people who can bring relevant skills, experience and perspective to our Board and who are excited by the opportunity to help shape the next stage of our growth and impact across East Africa.
