About the organisation

Impact was founded in 1978, to resolve issues communities were facing at the time. Since then we have grown and developed extensively to ensure we respond to the needs of Sussex communities and individuals today.

Impact’s Central team provide expertise in Finance, HR, IT and facilities, health and safety and business development. This ensures each of our specialist teams can focus on excellence in service delivery and ongoing development of their services. Sharing this expertise ensures more funding goes directly into service delivery and brings financial stability across the organisation.

Our mission is to support individuals and communities in Sussex to live healthy, fulfilling, and happy lives. We achieve this by offering the appropriate support at the right time and by collaborating to design and deliver the services that best meet their diverse needs.

Impact lead on providing services and support for older people through a significant contract with Brighton and Hove City Council, sub contracting to nine other organisations.

We deliver support for children and young people through our Young People's Centre where we also rent space for offices and service delivery to other local young peoples organisations. We have eleven houses providing a home and support for young women and work with people with disabilities through advocacy and employment support.

We provide Safeguarding training for businesses and organisations and Lived Experience training by autistic people and people with learning difficulties for local authorities and businesses.

All our work aligns with our values -

We are dedicated to being inclusive and empowering. We work collaboratively and creatively to fulfill our mission, acting with integrity in all that we do.

About the role

The core requirements of Impact's trustees are -

  • Eligible and willing to act as a trustee of a UK charity, in line with Charity Commission guidance
  • Ability to act in the best interests of the charity, balancing opportunity, risk, and sustainability
  • Willingness to give adequate time to prepare for and attend board and committee meetings (approx 3-4 hours a quarter)
  • Commitment to collective decision-making, shared accountability, and respectful challenge

Trustees are required as a minimum to commit to reading reports prior to attending quarterly in person Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting (AGM), however occasionally further meetings are called to discuss urgent matters which we encourage all trustees to attend. We also have a Finance Committe who meet online quarterly 2 weeks prior to the full Board meeting which the person in this role would be required to attend and possibly lead, once a full understanding of the organisation has been gained.

The role of trustee is not permanent. Impact Trustees serve for a period of four years, at the end of which they may stand for re-election. (They may resign prior to the end of the initial four years)

Being a trustee is a form of volunteering. Our trustees are not paid and may not receive any personal financial gain from their role. However, they should also not be out of pocket for the work they do and can receive payment to cover any expenses.
