About the organisation

Hostage International exists to support the families of hostages, and former hostages around the world. Kidnappings and arbitrary detentions are frightening and often lonely experiences, impacting not only the hostage but their family, friends, community, colleagues and employer. As an independent charity, we strive to make sure that people affected are supported throughout their ordeal – and beyond.

We do this through:

Delivering direct and tailored support, guidance and information, and access to specialist services for those affected by hostage-taking and arbitrary detentions outside their home country.

Offering access to free professional services and bespoke advice, to include legal, media, trauma therapy, medical and dental care, and we aim to lessen the strain around administrative tasks, and financial or employment worries, for those affected.

Providing bespoke training to organisations, government departments and NGOs, around best practice in family support and hostage reintegration.

Working discreetly to encourage governments and employers to adopt policies and practices in family and post-release which take into account the family and former hostage perspectives.

About the role

As Treasurer, you will play a key role in ensuring that the charity maintains strong financial governance and operates in accordance with current legislation, Charity Commission for England and Wales guidance, Hostage International's constitution, and policies agreed by the Board of Trustees.

We are looking for someone with strong accounting and financial management experience, including:

  • Reviewing and monitoring budgets and financial performance.

  • Ensuring appropriate financial controls and processes are in place.

  • Overseeing financial management and reporting.

  • Providing the Board of Trustees with clear and informed financial guidance.

  • Helping the charity maintain sound financial governance and accountability.

This is an opportunity to use your professional expertise to make a meaningful contribution to the work of Hostage International and support the charity in delivering its vital work.

Our ideal candidate

If you are an accountant who would like to use your skills to support a small charity with a significant purpose, we would love to hear from you.

We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive Board of Trustees that reflects the communities we serve, and welcome applications from all backgrounds.

We are looking for a qualified accountant to join our professional and friendly team of trustees and employees. Ideally, you will bring experience of working in the charity sector and/or an international organisation, together with a genuinely empathetic approach and a strong commitment to upholding the good name and values of Hostage International.

What’s in it for you

As a trustee with accountancy qualifications, you can help to ensure that the Hostage International board fulfils its financial governance duties and responsibilities, while helping to safeguard the charity’s ability to deliver its vital work. You will work closely with the CEO, Chair and fellow trustees in providing constructive advice, financial oversight and assurance.  As an active member of the board of trustees, we would also expect the treasurer to represent the charity at events and to support our fundraising initiatives.
