About the organisation

Hopwood Hall College and University Centre is a further education vocational College with a strong reputation within the borough it serves. It has two campuses in Rochdale and Middleton. The College provides an extensive range of vocational and technical courses, and is committed to nurturing students to have the best opportunity in life and is very proud of its inclusive culture. About the role

The Hopwood Hall College Board currently comprises of:

  • The Principal & Chief Executive

  • Up to fifteen Independent Members

  • Two student members

  • Two staff members

  • Co-opted Members who are members of a specific committee

The Board, supported by the College’s Senior Leadership Team, makes the strategic decisions affecting the College.

Board members (Governors) are responsible for setting the strategic direction of the College and ensuring that the organisation is robust and meets the needs of its stakeholders by holding the senior executive to account for the delivery of agreed aims and objectives. Each member brings to the Board, a mix of knowledge, skills and abilities, which are unique and complement those of other Governors, to provide a broad range of expertise.

The Board has five committees (Audit & Risk, Standards, Employment & Finance, Search & Governance and Appraisal & Remuneration).  The Committees are made up of Board Members and may include co-opted members.

Specific Skills and Abilities:

  • Financial experience / expertise – qualified Accountants and finance managers working at mid-to senior leadership level or

  • Qualified finance leaders from a range of industries and background, working at financial controller, head of finance, finance director and chief financial officer level

  • Exposure to / experience of working at a strategic/management level in a financial environment

  • Knowledge / experience / exposure to Accounting systems and processes

  • An understanding / experience of the key aspects of financial reporting including management accounts and year-end financial statements


Time Commitment:

  • The Board’s agreed attendance target is at least 80%.

  • Board Members are expected to attend 5 Board and 4 Committee meetings each year

  • Co-opted Members are expected to attend four Committee meetings each year.

  • Read the papers which will be circulated approximately one week ahead of the meeting.


Eligibility:

  • All members are required to agree to have a DBS checks on appointment, to sign up to the College’s Code of Conduct for Board Members and to confirm their continuing eligibility to serve.

  • In addition, all Members must complete a declaration of interests form on appointment covering the interests of themselves and close family members and disclose any changes in a timely manner thereafter.

  • A person is not usually eligible to be a Member of an FE college if they have been declared bankrupt or served a sentence following a conviction.

  • Members should not have a teaching role or be a student at the College unless they are appointed as staff or student members.


Term:

  • In accordance with the Committee’s Terms of Reference, the initial appointment will be for a term of up to 4 years (which is subject to review after the first 12 months).
