About the organisation

Being a parent, whatever your situation, can be very challenging, especially when children are young. Many parents feel exhausted and overwhelmed by the stresses of family life.

Therefore, we support families with children under five in Surrey Heath. We are an independent charity, and although associated with Home-Start UK and part of the consortium of Home-Start Surrey, our trustees independently govern our direction and manage our finances. As the cost of living crises impact on families, we’re needed more than ever; our trustees are planning our future, and need good financial governance in order to survive and grow.

About the role

  • Monitoring the financial standing of the charity and reporting to the Board about cash-flow forecasting, income streams, out-going expenses and the overarching strategic management of the organisation’s financial resources

  • Overseeing planning/budgeting processes in participation with the Board and constructively challenging where required

  • Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plans and overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process

  • Working with the Administrator and Manager, preparing and producing Management Accounts in a timely manner for Board meetings

  • With the Administrator, ensuring that invoices, etc., are correct, and then paid according to the organisation’s finance policy

  • Ensuring payroll, pensions, PAYE, NI, Gift Aid and associated systems are being administered correctly, and advising as necessary

  • Overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process and reporting on financial health to the Board of trustees at regular intervals

  • Explaining financial technicalities of Management and Annual Accounts in plain language which is fully understood by all trustees

The Board meets six times per annum, usually on the 2nd Monday of alternative months. The Treasurer will need to meet with staff regularly; that can be face-to-face or via video chat.

Our ideal candidate

Our Board includes people with experience and skills in support for Early Years; we’d expect our new Treasurer to have empathy with our cause and the families we support.

If you have some experience of charity finance, we’d welcome that, although if your experience is from other sectors, please talk to us. Full induction to our organisation will be provided, plus specialist support as a new trustee, including access to external training.

We’d welcome your financial qualification but that’s not a requirement as our finances aren’t complex. An understanding of how charity finance works is beneficial, with the important ability to communicate financial information clearly, especially to other trustees. Support from our employees is always available, as they will be dealing with day-to-day finances.

What’s in it for you

What do you get as a volunteer trustee with our organisation?

  • An opportunity to exercise your strategic financial & planning skills, probably in a different environment or context

  • A chance to expand and implement your understanding of our work

  • A chance to augment your experience of charities

  • A boost to your career and CV, if needed

  • Satisfaction of helping an organisation that supports our local community, thus giving something back

  • Induction training from us; training, support and assistance from local charity-support & advice agencies; reimbursement of reasonable expenses, if needed
