About the organisation
Globe Community Project (GCP) is a small charity based in Tower Hamlets, East London, working to transform loneliness into connection for isolated and under-served people, including refugees, asylum seekers and older residents.
We run two main programmes. Well Old supports over-60s at risk of isolation and loneliness through six-week wellbeing courses, wellbeing days and volunteering opportunities, reaching around 134 older people last year, 100% of whom reported improved wellbeing.
Touching Safe Ground supports recently-arrived women and children seeking asylum or refuge, many of whom have survived trauma, gender-based violence or displacement. We run weekly trauma-informed yoga and English for wellbeing sessions at a GP surgery and a local asylum hostel, alongside a creche for younger children. 96% report improved belonging and confidence, while 91% report improved physical and mental health.
Our children's Homework Club, launched in March 2025 at the hostel, gives children aged 5 to 11 and living in the hostel a safe, quiet space to study, with dedicated volunteer support, books and learning materials. Around 95% of children join Club not meeting expected levels for their age. In 2025-26 we supported 28 children through 44 weekly sessions, with 82% improving at school.
About the role
As Treasurer, you'll bring confidence and clarity to Globe Community Project's finances, giving our staff the headroom to focus on transforming loneliness into connection for isolated people across Tower Hamlets. As well as fulfilling the duties of a Trustee, you'll maintain oversight of GCP's financial affairs, working closely with our Executive Director and Board Chair to keep the Board up to speed on our financial trajectory and ahead of any issues.
We're looking for someone hands-on who's itching to get stuck in! As a small charity we need every member of the team actively on board, so as well as some advising, you'll also do some 'doing.'
You'll be getting familiar with our management accounts, requesting the information you need, and helping ensure our financial reporting is as clear and robust as possible. That means overseeing the quarterly presentation of budgets and management accounts to the board; engagement on and presentation of the year end accounts; monitoring financial viability and reserves; and leading on the appointment of, and liaison with, our independent examiner. You'll also advise on the financial implications of our strategic plan, oversee financial risk management, and ensure our accounts are prepared and disclosed as required by the Charity Commission and Companies House, while keeping the wider Board informed and confident about its own financial duties.
Day to day, you'll liaise regularly with our Director and chair the quarterly Finance Sub-Committee, which meets ahead of full Board meetings.
This is a voluntary role, with reasonable expenses reimbursed, and over the coming year there's a particular opportunity to shape our 2028-2033 strategy, bringing financial rigour to a bigger, forward-looking vision for the charity
Our ideal candidate
We're looking for a local finance professional who wants to take a genuinely hands-on approach: someone willing to dig into our accounts, ask the right questions, and help make our financial management and reporting as clear and robust as possible, rather than simply putting the figures provided through AI.
Essential
- Finance background, ideally with some exposure to charity or non-profit accounting; if not, real enthusiasm to learn, drawing on sound commercial experience and an understanding of how SMEs operate.
- Strategic thinker, able to balance risk and opportunity and translate corporate experience into the context of a small, grassroots charity.
- Confident, clear communicator, able to bring financial information to life for non-finance specialists on the Board and staff team.
- Willingness to play an active, ongoing role, forecasting, setting budgets, liaising with our independent examiner, rather than a purely governance-at-a-distance approach.
Desirable
- Previous trustee or non-executive experience, though not required, as we provide full induction and training.
- Knowledge of the local Bangladeshi community or the wider Tower Hamlets area, reflecting the communities we serve.
- Experience supporting organisations through growth or change.
- Beyond technical skills, we're looking for someone who shares our values: energy, enthusiasm and genuine commitment, as well as sound independent judgement, and a strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
We particularly welcome applicants who would broaden the diversity of thinking on our Board and who reflect the communities GCP serves; you don't need previous governance experience to apply. Above all, we want a Treasurer who is as comfortable rolling up their sleeves with the detail as they are advising the Board at a strategic level. Someone who wants to be part of a small, close-knit team, not just oversee it from a distance.
Must be available for quarterly in-person Board meetings, 5.30-7.30pm in Bethnal Green, quarterly online meetings in-between, and occasional ad-hoc online meetings during office hours.
What’s in it for you
Joining Globe Community Project's Board means playing a direct part in transforming loneliness into connection for hundreds of isolated people across Tower Hamlets each year. When you read the stories of change our work makes possible for recently-arrived refugees rebuilding their lives, and older people at risk of chronic isolation, you won't just feel moved, you'll know you helped make it happen.
As Treasurer, you'll gain genuine governance experience at Board level, working alongside a friendly, closely-knit Board and a small, dedicated staff team who take real pride in what they do: in our 2026 survey, 100% of staff, freelancers and volunteers said their work is meaningful, they had a positive experience with GCP, and would recommend working with us. You'll broaden your network, sharpen your skills in translating financial detail into clear strategic narrative, and have real influence over the direction of a growing, values-driven charity, including a chance to help shape our 2028-2033 strategy during the coming year.
This is also a genuine opportunity to develop as a leader: you'll be trusted with real responsibility from day one, supported by a full induction, and given space to bring your own ideas and expertise to issues you care about. Because we're a small, grassroots organisation, your contribution will be visible and valued; you won't be one voice among many on a large, distant Board, but someone whose judgement materially shapes decisions.
Beyond personal and professional development, you'll help build a Board that better reflects the diversity of the communities we serve, alongside people who bring genuine breadth of perspective and lived experience. If you're looking to give back, grow your leadership experience, and help guide a charity making a tangible difference in Tower Hamlets, this is a rare chance to combine financial expertise with real, visible impact.
