Future Woodlands Scotland is a charity working to create a Scotland where people and nature thrive, restoring trees from city spaces to wild places.
Our vision is a Scotland where trees and native woodlands are thriving for our wildlife, communities and climate.
Our mission is to protect, create and restore woodlands. We do this by building skills, sharing knowledge, and transforming urban and rural landscapes through meaningful partnerships.
Since 2012, we have grown from supporting research into native woodlands to delivering national programmes that restore ancient woods, build skills, support local nurseries and bring trees into everyday spaces.
Working with landowners and partners across Scotland, we help restore degraded or ‘ghost’ native woodlands and ensure the right skills are in place to support long-term woodland creation. We also work to create greener, healthier towns and cities through the development of our £10 million urban forestry programme.
As we enter our next phase of development, we are strengthening our support for woodland research and enaction, alongside expanding woodland creation and restoration across Scotland, ensuring our impact continues to grow.

About the role
As Finance Trustee, you will contribute your expertise to both the Board and our Finance and Audit Committee, helping to guide the charity through our next phase of growth.The Finance Trustee provides strategic oversight of financial management, sustainability and risk, and is a member of the Finance and Audit Committee.
Working with fellow Trustees and the staff team, you will help ensure the organisation remains financially resilient, well governed and able to deliver its mission.
Key responsibilities
As a Trustee, you will:
- Oversee and monitor delivery of the organisation’s strategy
- Ensure strong financial governance and effective use of resources
· Maintain compliance with legal and governance obligations
- Provide constructive challenge and support to the Chief Executive and Management team
- Support the growth of the organisation through representation at external functions or to the media when appropriate
- Establish and monitor policies to govern organisational activities
- Act as an ambassador for our work and the organisation
As Finance Trustee and Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee, you will:
- Support oversight of financial planning, budgeting and reporting
- Review financial performance and controls through the Finance and Audit Committee
- Contribute to risk management and financial governance
- Provide financial insight to inform strategic decision-making
Our ideal candidate
We are looking for an individual with:
- Professional experience in finance at a senior level (e.g. accountancy, financial management, audit, investment or related disciplines)
- The ability to contribute effectively to board meetings, including analysing information, contributing to discussions and supporting decision-making
- The ability to communicate complex finances to different audiences at the appropriate levels
- A strategic mindset, with the ability to support organisational development and growth
- Experience of supporting or managing organisational or operational change
- A collaborative approach and sound judgement
- Commitment to contributing time, expertise and sound judgement to support the organisation’s effectiveness
- Previous Trustee experience is not required.
Desirable experience
- Experience and understanding of charity sector financial management
- A genuine interest in environmental impact and the protection of Scotland's natural landscapes
