About the organisation
Fallowfield and Withington foodbank is a proactive small charity that provides emergency food provision to those in need across the communities we cover in South Manchester. Alongside this we offer several complementary services and projects that seek to not only enrich the lives of those involved but also seeks to alleviate poverty and hardship before it reaches the crisis stage of consistent reliance on emergency support.
Our mission is to end the need for foodbanks in our area and communities. While we understand that is an ambitious target we are confident that the work we are doing is making that outcome more achievable. Our core offer is emergency food provision, we have typically fed around 6000 people per year over the last three years. We offer this by working in conjunction with local stakeholders such as social workers/schools/medical professionals who refer people to our service. We provide the food while we work with the referrer on the underlying issues that lead people to needing to access the service. Food insecurity is a symptom of poverty not a cause.
Alongside our core work we offer a series of additional projects and services such as the co-location of advice services in our sessions, a community meal project and a holiday hunger project. These projects are a huge part of what we do and are part of our mission to be more than just food. Our co-location of advice is done in collaboration with other Trussell foodbanks in the area and has seen financial gains of hundreds of thousands of pounds for clients. Our community meal has provided a free three course meal to hundreds of guests over the past three years with a particular focus on families seeking asylum, so often missed in community outreach. Our holiday hunger project has provided over 2000 parcels to families across Christmas and Summer holidays providing a safety net when families are at most risk of food insecurity.
We are guided by a belief that a society without the need for foodbanks can be a reality, with social justice at the heart of our decision making. We seek to offer a dignified, compassionate and caring environment that gives every service user the opportunity to be heard and to be helped.
About the role
We are seeking a treasurer who will oversee the day to day financial aspects of the organisation, key financial reporting as well as provide the trustee board with strategic advice around financial decisions and planning.
Key Responsibilities;
- Managing financial transactions such as invoices
- Presenting financial reports to the Trustees at quarterly meetings
- Completing financial reporting such as the annual accounts for the charity commission
- Develop and implement financial policies
- Work with the trustees on financial planning and forecasting
- Provide the trustees with strategic perspective on issues around finances
As the treasurer, the role holder will manage financial transactions such as paying invoices, staff pay/tax etc. The successful applicant would be expected to attend quarterly meetings and prepare a financial report covering the time between meetings, setting out key data (incomings/outgoings) as well as anything that may require discussion such as sustainability. The treasurer is also expected to complete the annual accounts and ensure they are uploaded promptly. There is also a piece of work to be done on financial forecasting to help ensure the foodbank is sustainable into the future.
Our ideal candidate
We are looking for a dedicated treasurer with a deep understanding of financial management and/or accounting in order to ensure the foodbank has the best chance to work towards our charitable aims. Equally important is a commitment to the values of the foodbank such as empathy and understanding.
Essential:
- Experience in finance, accounting, or financial management.
- Strong understanding of governance and trustee responsibilities.
- Strategic thinker with sound financial judgement, able to evaluate risks and opportunities to support effective governance and long‑term sustainability.
- Ability to analyse complex financial data and present clear insights and suggestions to non-financial stakeholders.
- Commitment to the charity’s mission and ability to act in its best interests.
Desirable:
- Professional finance or accounting qualifications (e.g., ACCA, ACA, CIMA).
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to mentor or guide others effectively.
- Someone who is based in the North West to attend quarterly meetings (meetings are a mixture of online and face to face)
- An understanding of the local area and the challenges/opportunities facing foodbanks
