About the organisation

Eating Better is a UK-based NGO alliance of over 70 environmental, animal welfare, farming, public health and social justice organisations. Our vision is for everyone in the UK to eat nourishing and affordable food; with more plants and less and better meat and dairy, produced in a way to benefit people, animals and the planet.

We provide a forum for members to share ideas, discuss different approaches and work together. Our thought leadership enables the development of joint strategies used collectively to influence public and political discourse and to underpin the development of shared asks of policy makers, the public sector and industry. A key area of our work is to facilitate consensus-building and cross-sectoral collaboration through workshops and events, and through the production of joint research and resources. Our overall aim is to achieve a just transition to a healthier, more sustainable and accessible food system, for people across all cultures and backgrounds in the UK.

We are a registered charity (no.1175669) governed by the Board of Trustees. We receive funding support from alliance members, trusts and foundations and individuals.

About the role

This is an opportunity to join Eating Better’s Board of Trustees as our Treasurer, contributing to the charity’s good governance, development, financial planning and the smooth running of the Eating Better alliance.

If you feel you can provide financial guidance, oversight of Eating Better’s accounts, and support with meeting our financial reporting requirements as a charity, we’d like to hear from you. Our Board of Trustees is a friendly, collaborative and effective group that helps us strengthen and uphold the vision of the Eating Better alliance. Although most of our existing Trustees have been drawn from within the alliance, we would welcome the right person from any sector.

  3. Review and approve budgets and cashflow projections with the Executive Director on a quarterly basis

  1. Ensure the board fulfils its financial responsibilities as a charity
  2. Ensure proper systems exist for budgeting, financial control, insurance, and reporting
  3. With the Executive Director, keep board members informed on finances of Eating Better by written report, at least on a quarterly basis
  4. Chair the Finance sub committee
  5. Communicate with relevant staff and other board members so as to maintain a clear picture of the financial health of Eating Better
  6. Ensure compliance and regulations requirements as appropriate
  7. Ensure financial reports are comprehensible and properly discussed
  8. Ensure financial reports are provided in the proper format and at the proper time, as required by other bodies in law
  9. Ensure the appointment of auditors or independent examiners
  10. Provide a financial report to members on an annual basis
  11. Ensure the board develops a long-term financial strategy for Eating Better with objectives which can be monitored
  12. Monitor progress in budget implementation
  13. Ensure appropriate financial goals are set for the resources available to Eating Better
