About the organisation
Chester Pride is a year‑round LGBTQ+ charity serving Chester, Cheshire and North Wales. It began as a community‑led Pride event in 2013, when around 2,500 people gathered outside Chester Town Hall to celebrate LGBTQ+ visibility and inclusion . Since then, Chester Pride has grown into a registered charity delivering community programmes, support services, outreach, and one of the region’s largest Pride events.
Chester Pride’s mission is rooted in visibility, safety, inclusion and community action. The charity exists to ensure LGBTQ+ people across the region feel safe, respected, connected and supported, and to create spaces where they can thrive. Its work is guided by the belief that LGBTQ+ people deserve full inclusion in civic life and access to supportive, welcoming environments.
Alongside the annual Pride celebration, Chester Pride now delivers a wide range of year‑round community services. These include social groups for adults, youth and families; wellbeing workshops; safe‑space activities; and outreach programmes designed to reduce isolation and strengthen community connection. Examples include Out + About (adult social group), Trans Social, Trans Youth Group, and Rainbow Families, which provides inclusive activities for LGBTQ+ parents and children . The charity also runs practical support initiatives such as the Box Project, offering free condoms and menstrual products, and the Schools Nurture Programme, which provides inclusive outreach in local schools to support young LGBTQ+ people and promote understanding among staff and students.
Chester Pride’s flagship event remains a major part of its identity. The Pride celebration, now held at Castle Square, has grown significantly over the past decade and features a parade, live performances, community stalls, wellbeing spaces, and family‑friendly activities. The event is designed to celebrate LGBTQ+ culture, promote visibility, and bring together allies, partners and local organisations in a shared commitment to inclusion and equality.
The charity’s objectives include:
Promoting LGBTQ+ equality and visibility through public events, campaigns and partnerships.
Providing safe, inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ people of all ages to connect, socialise and access support.
Delivering community programmes that reduce isolation, improve wellbeing and strengthen resilience.
Supporting young people and families through targeted outreach and inclusive education initiatives.
Building partnerships with local organisations, schools, businesses and public bodies to advance LGBTQ+ inclusion across the region.
Ensuring accessibility and safety at all events and activities, including dedicated wellbeing and support services.
Today, Chester Pride is both a celebration and a community anchor. It continues to evolve in response to local needs, expanding its services, strengthening governance, and deepening its impact across Chester and the wider region. Its work reflects a commitment to year‑round support, community empowerment, and the belief that Pride is not just an event, but a sustained effort to build a more inclusive society.
