About the organisation
We are a highly respected campaigning organisation, reasoned and authoritative in our arguments, independent and principled in debate, and constructive in our proposals. Because we are known to be an organisation driven by its members, our voice carries significant weight with the Government.
We care about amongst other things:
The climate emergency is the biggest threat facing our countryside and planet. We need to drastically reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. But there’s good news: the countryside can provide many of the solutions.
CPRE promotes planting more trees and hedgerows, taking better care of our soils and restoring peatlands. These actually suck carbon from the air and store it in the ground. And we’re calling on government to speed up the move to renewable energy and to set a target date for phasing fossil fuels out altogether.
Renewable energy is key to a thriving countryside.
We’re working for a countryside that everyone can enjoy free from the effects of air pollution and climate breakdown. And this means getting more of our energy from wind, sunlight, and hydropower. But without careful planning, these energy sources can have a detrimental effect on the appearance of the countryside.
Wiltshire CPRE is creating a series of local position statements on evaluating proposed “green” energy developments.
We campaign for ‘Rooftop First’ – Solar on rooftops instead of in our Greenfields, which are needed for food security.
Housing
The countryside you cherish is disappearing fast. As the demand for housing in Wiltshire is growing, too many of our green spaces are sacrificed. We're campaigning to make better use of previously developed land in our towns and cities that can regenerate them and provide the housing we need.
We want everyone in the countryside to have a fair chance in life, whatever their circumstances. To make this a reality, we need to ensure there are enough low-cost homes to rent or buy in our villages and market towns.
We’re working with local partners and urging the government to make sure communities get the homes they need to thrive.
Sustainable transport
We want everyone to have genuine, sustainable travel choices, keeping cars off the road and pollution out of the atmosphere.
We know that sustainable public transport options can be really lacking in rural areas, and the transport sector currently accounts for the largest share of UK greenhouse gas emissions. That’s why we’re working hard to advocate for local transport improvements, improving connectivity and reducing loneliness, isolation and access for everyone.
About the role
Volunteering with us is a fantastic way to help us champion protecting our countryside and the pressures put on it from housing and road development, preparing it for climate change, addressing renewable energy, biodiversity and sustainable transport.
As treasurer you’ll have an essential role in planning and accounting for our finances to ensure the long-term sustainability of our charity.
This is a relatively undemanding, part-time role for someone who has retired from the Services and who lives in or near Wiltshire. It could easily be combined with other part-time roles.
CPRE Wiltshire is both a charity and a limited company.
What you'll do:
Oversee and manage the charity's financial records.
Prepare financial reports for trustee meetings.
Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and reporting deadlines.
Provide financial advice and guidance to the board of trustees/directors.
Monitor and manage with budget.
Support fundraising efforts by providing financial information.
Work variable hours, usually no more than 2 - 3 hours per week at times of your choosing remotely.
Attend four quarterly Trustee meetings and our one AGM in person.
Our ideal candidate
We are looking for someone with the following skills and experience, almost all of which will be natural for a retired Service officer or warrant officer:
Strong organisational and financial skills.
Experience in financial management, bookkeeping, or accounting. Experience of holding a Service funds account and/or having direct or indirect experience with a Service budget would be ideal.
Ideally, familiarity with charity finance and regulations. However this could quickly be learnt.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Commitment to the charity's mission and values.
Experience using a financial package such as Quick Books (desirable but not essential). If preferred, the account can easily be run on an Excel spreadsheet, as it has been recently.
What’s in it for you
Volunteering with us is a fantastic way to help us champion environmental issues such as the climate emergency, renewable energy, biodiversity and sustainable transport.
With your support we can do even more!
