About the organisation

The BSLM is an independent charity set up to promote the role of lifestyle medicine in improving people’s health and wellbeing. We empower healthcare professionals to support patients to prevent, manage and even reverse many chronic conditions through education and connection to our like-minded community.

Lifestyle Medicine is evidence-based, clinical care that supports behaviour change through person-centred techniques to improve mental wellbeing, social connection, healthy eating, physical activity, sleep and minimisation of harmful substances and behaviours. It acknowledges the need for action on socio-economic determinants of health, provides education around the 6 key pillars as well proven techniques to sustain lifestyle changes.

About the role

BSLM Trustees are individuals who lead and govern the charity, ensuring the Charity operates ethically and effectively, safeguarding assets, leading the direction and fulfilling its purpose. The constitution states that there should be a minimum of 3 and maximum of 12 charity trustees. The Trustees can appoint additional expertise to the Board on a time limited basis.

Trustees at BSLM have six main duties (as per OSCR requirements):

  • Ensure the Charity is carrying out its purpose for the public benefit
  • Comply with Charity’s governing document and the law
  • Act in the Charity’s best interests
  • Ensure the charity is accountable
  • Manage the charity’s resources responsibly
  • Act with reasonable care and skill

We are seeking a passionate and committed Trustee with strong financial expertise to join our Board and help shape the future of our charity. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who not only understands finance but genuinely cares about using those skills to make a meaningful difference. As a Trustee, you will play a key role in guiding our financial strategy, ensuring robust governance, and supporting sustainable growth so we can maximise our impact. You’ll work alongside a dedicated team, bringing insight, challenge, and enthusiasm to financial oversight, budgeting, and risk management. If you are driven by purpose and motivated to use your financial knowledge to create real, lasting change, we would love to hear from you.

Our ideal candidate

The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in finance, alongside a genuine commitment to the charity’s mission and values. They will have proven experience in areas such as financial management, accounting, audit, or strategic financial planning—ideally within a senior or advisory role—and a solid understanding of governance, risk, and compliance. A relevant professional qualification (such as ACA, ACCA, or CIMA) would be advantageous but not essential.

Beyond technical expertise, we are looking for someone who is analytical, inquisitive, and confident in interpreting financial information and challenging constructively where needed. They should be able to communicate complex financial matters clearly to non-financial colleagues and contribute to balanced, well-informed decision-making at board level. Integrity, sound judgement, and a collaborative approach are essential, as is the ability to think strategically while remaining attentive to detail.

Most importantly, the successful candidate will have a real passion for finance as a force for good—someone motivated by the opportunity to use their skills to support a cause, strengthen organisational sustainability, and help drive meaningful, positive impact.

What’s in it for you

Becoming a Trustee is a rewarding opportunity to use your financial expertise in a way that creates real, lasting impact. As part of the Board at the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, you’ll play a key role in shaping the organisation’s future while supporting a mission focused on improving health and wellbeing through lifestyle medicine.

Alongside the chance to contribute to a meaningful cause, you’ll also develop valuable new skills. You’ll gain first-hand experience of charity governance and board-level decision-making, strengthening your strategic thinking and broadening your perspective beyond day-to-day financial management. Working with a diverse group of professionals, you’ll enhance your ability to influence, collaborate, and communicate complex ideas clearly.

This role also offers the opportunity to deepen your understanding of how charities operate—particularly around funding, sustainability, and stakeholder engagement—while applying your financial knowledge in new and impactful ways.

Ultimately, this is a chance to combine your passion for finance with a purpose-driven role, helping to guide an organisation that is making a tangible difference to people’s lives, while growing your own skills, experience, and professional network along the way.
