About the organisation

As an organisation we have been in existence 23 years and the current charity since 2012. We provide 1:1 therapeutic interventions and education to children and young people who have very serious life challenges and who are unable to sustain education in mainstream or most specialist placements. We are successful in our mission. We are now coming to a period of succession planning and we are seeking someone to draw alongside us with financial expertise to look through what we are doing and to look at possible ways to make efficiencies and increase our profits so that we can grow our facilities to meet the need for more service users. We have 3 centres within 25 minutes of each other in South Devon and I envisage that the time needed to provide this help to us would be one day on site in person, one day to liaise with the Trustees and Finance Managers and one day to write a report.

About the role

Role Title: Other Finance Volunteer

We need: Project-based support, studying financial efficiency via charity accounts and looking at staffing, preparing for growth and helping us to future-proof the charity insofar as is possible.

Our ideal candidate

We need someong who has expertise and experience in financial systems and audits. Project management skills. Familiarity with Local Authority procurement, investments, financial sustainability and with an eye for entrepreneurship, as we have a lot of scope for using our centres better. We need someone who is brilliant at the task side of things, but also someone who has a real vision for what can be done and who will liaise with some of our staff to stimulate their creative brains.

What’s in it for you

At Breakthrough, we change lives and we save lives. We take people who are at the bottom of the pile, who have experiences years of 'failure' through 'the system' and who usually come to us very broken, traumatised, not knowing how to navigate complex diagnoses. We also want so much to support parents. The person who comes to us will be part of this and will help to strengthen the charity so that it can continue and grow to be more robust and be able to expand the work that we already do. We notice that everyone who comes to Breakthrough, whether staff, students, parents, commissioners, professionals or trustees, tell us that they go away with a real sense of passion for what is being done. We have excellent quality assurance systems in place and can evidence all that we claim. We will value you and the opinions and advice you give us. What is wonderful is that those who are involved in contributing to this work, at all levels, will know that the impact they have made will be a positive impact on their lives in ways that could not be anticipated.
