About the organisation

Bolton Deaf Society has been working over 150 years to provide for the deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people across Bolton equating to over 45,000 people. Staff and volunteers deliver frontline support, in the form of accessible information, advice and guidance; bespoke advocacy and training, clubs and even a sign language choir.

About the role

Strategic

  • To assist and advise in the formation of our charity’s development plans with particular regard to ensuring that our organisation has the resources necessary to deliver well 


Financial

  • To ensure that the Board of Trustees are always kept aware of their financial duties and responsibilities, and the need to comply with all legislation

  • To ensure that the Board receives appropriate budget/financial monitoring information around our charity’s operations, working with the Chair, CEO, Office Manager and appointed Accountants in production of Bolton Deaf Society’s Annual Report and Accounts

  • To ensure that all accounts are prepared and shared in the form required by the Charity Commission, funders, commissioners and other relevant parties

  • To keep accounting procedures, controls and policies under review – consistent with the scheme of delegation, formally updating and signing-off these procedures on an annual basis 

  • To review and update the Board’s scheme of delegation on an annual basis 

  • To oversee the appointment of Accountants/Auditors and review on a regular basis

  • To work in close collaboration with the Chair, Trustees, CEO, Office Manager and appointed Accountants, ensuring that their responsibilities are fulfilled and goals achieved

  • To work towards establishing and Chairing a Finance Sub-Committee as the Charity grows Assets and Investments

  • To ensure that the Charity has an appropriate Investment Policy and that this is kept under review in line with changing economic conditions and charity regulations

  • To lead on investment monitoring and reporting to the Board of Trustees, setting and keeping appropriate reserves under review

  • To ensure the maintenance of an asset register for the organisation, reporting on the same to the Board of Trustees, CEO and Office Manager Other

  • To assist the Vice Chair in annual appraisal of the Chair, having consulted in advance with other Trustees and executives of Bolton Deaf Society
