About the organisation
Board Racial Diversity UK’s (BRDuk) purpose is to increase the representation of individuals from Black and Asian backgrounds on trustee boards across the UK. BRDuk is the successor to Action for Trustee Racial Diversity (ATRD), founded by Malcolm John in 2019. It became a registered charity in November 2024 and continues ATRD’S purpose to increase the racial diversity of charity Boards. Only 8% of trustees are from Black and Asian backgrounds (only 2.9% women of colour). This compares to 17% of the population of England and Wales from Black and Asian backgrounds. In numerical terms, 60,000 more Black and Asian trustees are required to achieve proportionate representation. BRDuk currently provides a number of resources and services to achieve our ambitions. They include our Black and Asian Networks’ Organisations database with over 500 organisations across sectors, which charities might engage to attract trustees; one-to-one consultancy support on inclusive recruitment and retention strategies; and pilot initiatives to empower Black and Asian prospective trustees.
About the role
The role of BRDuk Board members is to provide strategic oversight and regular monitoring of BRDuk’s activities and impact. They do not get involved in the day-to-day work of the organisation. That is for the CEO and their team. You can find more about the role of trustees on the Charity Commission website. Trustees will bring their own skills, expertise and networks in support of BRDuk’s achievement of its vision, mission and operational objectives. They will provide both support and challenge to the CEO. We would expect trustees to volunteer their individual skills, knowledge and expertise to support the executive team on specific areas of work such as fundraising, finance, marketing and communications, income generation or equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). This might involve them leading or being members of “task and finish” groups, Board sub-committees or working groups.
Our ideal candidate
We are seeking a trustee with financial expertise to join our Board. This role plays a key part in supporting BRDuk’s financial health, helping to ensure that fellow trustees and the senior leadership team have the insight and analysis needed to make well-informed, responsible decisions. We welcome applications from individuals with a broad range of backgrounds and experiences. You do not need previous trustee experience; however, you should bring strong financial skills and hold a recognised accountancy or finance qualification.
Essential
● An accountancy qualification or equivalent knowledge gained by experience.
● An understanding of the accounting requirements of the Companies Acts, Charities Act, Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP), and finance reporting in line with FRS102.
● An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of Trustees.
● Able to operate at a strategic level, bringing insight and interrogation to the development of organisational strategy.
● Ability to make balanced and informed decisions, thinking about the short term as well as the long term.
● Good communication and interpersonal skills.
● Willingness to listen, contribute, and collaborate as part of a team
● Cares passionately about the work of Board Racial Diversity UK.
● Champions equity, diversity and inclusion and encourages others to do the same.
Desirable
● Experience in charity finance in small or start-up charities
