About the organisation

Our philosophy and activities

Each person is on a journey with Arthritis that is unique to them so we support people in finding the best path for them. We are not clinicians and do not give medical advice, but we  offer activities that support clinical guidelines to reduce pain and improve mobility on a daily basis. Our aim is to minimise the impact that Arthritis has on daily life through exercise, nutrition, pain management and mindfulness.  We believe self-care is a vital way to maintain a healthy life as well as enabling individuals to take control over their condition on a daily basis.

Our activities using a combination of exercise, healthy eating, pain management and mindfulness techniques to enable people living with Arthritis to develop self-care strategies such as adapted exercise and yoga sessions which help reduce the pain on movement and improve mobility. They're suitable for everyone regardless of mobility or experience and can be adapted to meet individual need. Hydrotherapy is the perfect tool for recovery after surgery or to maintain healthy joints and muscles.

Our 'Living with Arthritis' workshop covers for key areas and helps people to develop self-care strategies that work for them.

We offer IT sessions to help people feel less isolated by technology and help them to gain a better understanding of technology in everyday life.

Social events are also an essential part of the charity offering people the chance to build on friendships and to share experiences as well as helping isolated members in the community.  The Christmas lunch which is usually funded by a corporate sponsor is the focal point of the year where everyone in the charity comes together.

Why should you support the charity

As a small grassroots charity it is very difficult to attract funding volunteers and support because of the disabling condition unfortunately the general public perceives the condition as just "aches and pains"and this misconception affects every area of the charity's ability to function on a level playing field.

With 200 different types of arthritis, affecting both internal and external parts of the body, it can be life changing and debilitating for those with the condition which causes chronic pain, depression and reduced movement.

About the role

The role of volunteer accountant is a pivotal role within the Charity because if there is no accountant there is no charity!

Completing and auditing accounts in line with the charity's constitution and in line with charity commission guidelines is critical for every charity. Our last Honorary account has just retired as she is 80.  We have no staff, limited income and are not VAT registered so the accounts are relatively simple - also helped by our book-keeper / treasurer preparing all the documentation to a meticulous standard.

Our ideal candidate

  • The candidate we are looking for must be a qualified accountant.

  • Good communication skills are essential and the ability to audit and reconcile accounts with the use of bank statements and other accounts in line with Charity Commission.

  • Guidelines are also a pre requisite.

The accounts will need submission each year.

The volunteer accountant would be required to meet with the Treasurer either remotely at least twice to iron out any queries prior to submission of accounts and once after submission.

What’s in it for you

What can we offer you at the Charity:

  • The knowledge that your role is pivotal within the organisation.

  • The opportunity to pass on your skills and advice to others and to hopefully learn more about the Charity.

Unfortunately we cannot offer any remuneration apart from travel expenses.

We can offer you an Invitation to Our Christmas dinner with a guest to share our most important day of the year and hear first-hand the impact that our charity has on people living with Arthritis.
