About the organisation

Age UK Berkshire was formed in 2012, having been Age Concern Berkshire since 1964 and the “Berkshire Older People’s Welfare Committee” since the 1950s. We’ve always worked with and for people aged over 50, taking a “whole County approach” across Berkshire, making a positive difference to the quality of older people’s lives.

We are an independent local charity, part of the Age UK brand, with a volunteer team of ~250, assisted by 50+ paid employees and governed by our Board of trustees.

About the role

Our Board includes people with experience in working with and for older people, and we’d expect our new Treasurer to have strong empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries.

In 2023/2024, our total income was £1.74m, our Balance Sheet almost £2m. Income the year before was £943k, against expenditure of £837k = we’re growing!

We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We want to expand the diversity of our Board, in all meanings of the word, and strongly welcome applications from people from less-represented groups.

We ask for about six hours per month which includes all meetings, discussions, etc., a little more at year-end and at our AGM. The Board meets quarterly with at least two of those meetings online, plus an annual FTF strategic away-day.

Our ideal candidate

You’ll have experience of financial management, possibly in a SME or charity.

Having a financial qualification would be very useful but isn’t a requirement; similarly, an understanding of the charity SORP or FRS102 isn’t necessary but would be welcome.

You won’t be preparing day-to-day financial statements, as these are provided by our outsourced accountancy firm. Rather, you’ll have a strategic oversight of our finances, bringing your analyses and advice to help us to strengthen and grow our services.

The ability to communicate financial information clearly, especially to other trustees, is very important. Support from our outsourced accountants will be available, as they produce our management accounts.

You don’t necessarily need prior experience of charity trusteeship, as full induction will be provided, plus specialist support as a new trustee including access to external training.

What’s in it for you

What do YOU get as a volunteer trustee with our organisation?

  • An opportunity to exercise your strategic financial & planning skills, probably in a different environment or context
  • An opportunity to make and lead change, using your financial outlook and analysis
  • A chance to expand and implement your understanding of our work
  • A chance to augment your experience of charities
  • A boost to your career and CV, if needed
  • Satisfaction of helping an organisation that offers supports to all older people in Berkshire, thus giving something back to your community

What do we get?

  • Your strategic financial management skills, knowledge, understanding and experience
  • Your abilities to influence plans for our charity’s future, especially as we continue to grow our service offer
  • Enhancement to our overall governance and the Board of trustees; assistance in our charity governance and operational growth
  • Your participation in our collective decision-making, contributing to all areas of our charity work
  • Your enthusiasm

What do our beneficiaries get?

  • The ability to continue and grow our support for older people
  • A forward-looking and agile organisation, with a well-informed and well-managed Board
