We are specialists in public legal education and information (PLEI)—providing resources and support that are user-centred, practical, and effective. Our work ranges from step-by-step guides and self-help tools to community-based projects, awareness campaigns, and systemic policy change initiatives. By combining research and practice, we deliver innovative approaches that improve access to justice both online and offline.

How We’re Funded

 

Our work is made possible through a mix of donations, grants from trusts and foundations, government funding, contracts, and income from training and consultancy services.

 

Our Governance

 

Advicenow is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. It is governed by its memorandum and articles of association and overseen by a committed Board of Trustees.

About the role

 

As a Trustee and Treasurer, you will:

  • Provide financial oversight to ensure the charity’s long-term sustainability and accountability.

  • Work closely with the Chair, Board, CEO, and Finance Manager to maintain robust governance and transparent reporting.

  • Contribute to shaping our strategic vision and growth, helping us deliver our three-year strategic plan.

  • Use your financial skills to support and challenge our thinking, ensuring we deliver maximum impact for our beneficiaries.

  • Play a critical part in the overall direction, vision, and strategy of Advicenow.

 

Term of Appointment

 

Trustees are appointed for an initial term of three years.

 

This may be renewed for a further two years, with the option of a final two-year term, making a maximum total of seven years.

 

Remuneration

 

This is a voluntary, unpaid role.

 

Reasonable out-of-pocket expenses incurred in the course of fulfilling trustee duties will be reimbursed.

 

Time Commitment

 

Approximately one day per month, including:

 

  • Reviewing Board papers.

  • Providing strategic oversight of the charity’s financial health.

  • Monitoring budgets and financial reporting.

  • Ensuring compliance with relevant financial regulations.

  • Engaging with the charity’s wider work and championing its mission.

 

Board Meetings

 

The Board meets online four times a year, for two hours each (usually 16:00–18:00).

24 June 2026

 

One in-person, full-day strategic planning meeting in London each year.

 

Finance Committee

 

As Treasurer, you will chair our Finance Committee, which meets quarterly for one hour.

Our ideal candidate

Essential Experience

  • Leadership or governance experience in charity & non-profit, justice & human rights, health, or technology sectors.
  • Strong financial experience, including budget oversight, financial reporting, a solid understanding of charity finance regulations, and a strategic approach to ensuring financial sustainability and the effective use of resources.
  • Experience in building high-level partnerships and fostering collaborations to support the charity’s mission.
  • Professional experience in financial management, accounting, audit, or a senior finance role in a relevant sector.
  • Experience of working with or advising Boards on financial matters, particularly in a charity context.

Desirable Experience

  • Lived experience of legal, social, or financial challenges similar to those faced by Advicenow’s service users, offering a first-hand perspective on their needs and barriers to access.

Knowledge and Skills

  • In-depth understanding of financial management principles and charity finance requirements.
  • Strong governance expertise, with a commitment to best practices in charity leadership and financial oversight. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial information clearly to non-financial trustees and stakeholders.
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities to support sound financial decision-making.
