Active Sussex works to increase physical activity levels in Sussex, taking a collaborative approach with partners to create the conditions that give everyone the opportunity to live active and healthier lives. Our goal is that everyone across Sussex can access the health and wellbeing benefits of being active.
About the role
To effectively carry out their role, the Independent Chair of the Board of Trustees will be:
- Setting the agenda: the agenda should take full account of the issues and the concerns of all directors. Agendas should be forward looking and concentrate on strategy and developing the Trust, rather than focusing on management issues
- Ensuring that directors receive accurate, timely and clear information: to enable the Board to make sound decisions, monitor effectively and provide advce to promote the success of the county
- Managing Board meetings: to ensure that sufficient time is allowed for discussion of issues, and where appropriate, arranging informal meetings beforehand to enable thorough preparation for the Board discussion. It is particularly important that directors have sufficient time to consider critical issues and are not faced with unrealistic deadlines for decision making
- Regular liaison with the Chief Executive of the Trust: to stay engaged and up to date
- Member development: taking the lead in inducting and developing individual directors, with a view to enhancing the Board's overall effectiveness
Time Commitment:
- Induction training
- Four Board meetings annually
- Two Trust events annually including AGM
- One annual Board away day
- Chair to represent the Trust on working groups, conferences and events
- Regular contact with the Board members (trustees), Chief Executive and core staff of the Trust

We are seeking individuals with the skills, experience and qualifications in Financial Management and Accounting, Human Resources and engaging and listening to communities.
