About the organisation

Action Breaks Silence works to create a world where women and girls live free from all forms of male violence and abuse.

Our purpose (mission) is to end violence against women and girls by educating, engaging and empowering communities.

We do this through 5 core programmes where we go into schools and communities and deliver programmes which enable participants to understand the root causes of VAWG, be aware of their own behvaiours and that of those around them and empower participants to protect themselves and their communities against VAWG. These programmes are:

i) Primary School Programme to End VAWG. This is delivered by students and young adults to older primary school students of all genders,

ii) Empowerment through Self-Defence Workshops (ETSD), and

iii) Undefining Masculinity Workshops (UDM)

(ii and iii are delivered in schools, communities and corporate settings)

iv) the Train-the-Trainer Programme and

v) the Youth Ambassador Programme. (iv) and (v) focus on upskilling young people to mentor younger students and to deliver these programmes and workshops.

All our activities as a charity aim to deliver training to girls, boys, women, and the broader community on topics in six main categories. In no particular order, they are:

  • Empathy and Active Bystander tools
  • Understanding the patriarchy and breaking gender stereotypes to promote gender equity
  • The nature of violence and abuse
  • Self-esteem, self-love, strength and competence
  • Core values, boundaries and consent
  • Principles and practice of physical self-defence.

What’s in it for you

We are a small but mighty charity and have big ambititions to grow our reach. Violence against women and girls is depressingly prevalent in society and attitudes across genders start early, and these days are influenced to a younger and younger audience through online content and harms. Our CEO Debi has dedicated her adult life to address VAWG as a survivor of childhood abuse herself. Through the charity she has reshaped how communities confront gender-based violence. Through our “Whole Schools Approach”, where the entire school and wider community are empowered to act, Action Breaks Silence delivers prevention programmes which equip children, parents, and teachers with tools to recognise harmful behaviours, set boundaries, and champion gender equity.

In the last year alone, over 4,000 young people participated in workshops, with 86% of primary school pupils reporting they could now stand up for themselves and others. Girls reclaimed confidence, boys learned empathy, and teachers described witnessing “amazing transformations” in their students. By addressing harmful norms early, Action Breaks Silence has created safer schools and stronger communities where conversations about consent and respect are no longer taboo. The huge commitment of our CEO and team is inspirational. We absolutely belive that change on scale is possible when led with courage, passion and tireless commitment.

Our beneficiaries are always much better at describing our impact! Here's just a small selection:

“The atmosphere of [the empowerment through self defence workshops] doesn’t only greatly benefit the students - as a trainer I always leave feeling more empowered and confident as well.  Topic of core values/boundaries is very important for the students and has benefitted me greatly in my personal life. I wish someone had talked to me about these topics when I was younger!” - Trainer

“Absolutely blown away by how engaged our young people were and how vested they were in the trainers’ advice and guidance. The trainers were warm, inclusive, humorous and extremely encouraging.” –Teacher

“A big THANK YOU to you and your team for delivering such an engaging and impactful Programme to our Year Six students at [our school]. Your efforts have sparked a noticeable transformation in our children. We are already seeing a new level of maturity and awareness in them. The reduction in playground fights and social issues in the classroom speaks volumes about the effectiveness of your approach and the positive influence you have had..." Teacher

As a volunteer you will play in a key role in our growth but enabling our finacial processes to be robust and rigourous to satisfy funder scrutiny. You will also meet an empassioned team of activists who are working hard to make positive change. Your skills and opinions will be deeply valued and listened to.
