About the organisation
In May 2022, Queer Britain proudly opened its doors to the public, becoming the UK’s first and only bricks and mortar LGBTQ+ Museum. In our opening year we welcomed over 50,000 visitors and the inaugural exhibition won the Museum Association’s Best Small Museum Project of the Year Award.
Alongside the Charity Board, we have a Trading Board that helps us to manage our non primary purpose trading, including retail and venue hire. You will be joining the organisation at an exciting time for the Board as we increase our portfolio of activities.
The executive leadership of Queer Britain rests with the Director of the Museum and members of the senior team, who are responsible for carrying out the day to day operations, with the strategic direction from both Boards.
About the role
The skills we require are people with senior level expertise in the finance/ accounting and/or legal areas, who will be able to share this expertise with other Board members and help the executive to operationalise that advice.
In addition to being a proven leader in your area of expertise, the ideal applicant will also fulfil the following:
- Help determine the mission of the organisation, and understand its collective purpose;
- Strategic and organisational planning;
- Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management;
- Using the combined expertise of the Board to support the Museum Director;
- Ensuring legal and ethical integrity;
- Monitoring and assessing the Board’s performance against targets;
- To serve as an active advocate and ambassador for the organisation;
- To be a constructively critical friend.
You will be expected to attend four Board meetings per year, but you are also expected to participate in conversations/ ad hoc meetings / attend events in between Board meetings.
Our ideal candidate
As a Non-Executive Director of Queer Britain Trading Limited, you will be passionate about the vision and mission of Queer Britain. You will have strong communication skills, be able to contribute to Board level discussion and to exercise good, independent judgement. You must have a strong commitment to equal opportunities, inclusion and diversity and the ability to work collaboratively in a small, but perfectly formed, team.
A Non-Executive Director will participate in the Trading Board’s decision-making processes, including preparation for, and attendance at, meetings of the Board, as well as any of the Board’s sub-committees to which they may be appointed.
What’s in it for you
On top of gaining Board/ Governance experience, you will expand on those skills you already possess and gain additional skills to add to your toolbox; in addition, you will be able to share your expertise with a group of people. Working on a diverse Board means that you get to meet and network with people from a different skill set as your own, and from different sectors. You will get a holistic view of how Queer Britain works, and can make an impact on the strategic overview of this new organisation.
