About the organisation

MumsAid is an award-winning specialist perinatal mental health charity based in Greenwich, South East London. We support women and families during pregnancy and early parenthood, providing accessible, specialist support to improve emotional and mental health and help mothers and babies get the best possible start in life.

Our vision is of a society where all mothers are supported to give their babies the best start in life. We believe that the right support during pregnancy and the early years can make a lasting difference not only to mothers and babies, but to families and communities.

We provide a range of services including free perinatal counselling, therapeutic and peer support groups, specialist support for young mothers, befriending and advocacy, support for parents of babies with additional needs, trauma-informed support and an out-of-hours text service, alongside training and clinical supervision for professionals working with mothers and families.

MumsAid is a small, growing charity with a dedicated staff and volunteer team. We currently have 17 staff (9.4 FTE) and an estimated annual turnover of approximately £557,000. Our work is funded through a combination of grants, commissioned services, donations and other income streams.

As a small charity, strong financial governance is particularly important to us. We want to ensure that our resources are used effectively and sustainably, while continuing to develop our services in response to the needs of mothers and families.

We are now looking for a Treasurer to join our Board and provide financial leadership, challenge and oversight as we continue to develop and grow the organisation.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced finance professional to join MumsAid as Treasurer and play a key role in ensuring the charity remains financially sustainable, well governed and able to achieve its charitable objectives.

The Treasurer will provide financial leadership and oversight to the Board, working closely with the CEO, Finance Officer and fellow Trustees. This is an ongoing voluntary Trustee role and an opportunity to use your financial expertise to make a meaningful difference to a growing maternal mental health charity.

Key responsibilities include:

• Providing the Board with oversight of MumsAid’s financial health, performance and sustainability.

• Ensuring appropriate financial controls, records, systems and procedures are maintained and that the charity meets relevant legal, regulatory and financial requirements.

• Overseeing the annual budgeting and financial planning process, constructively challenging assumptions and advising the Board on the financial implications of strategic plans.

• Reviewing management accounts and financial reporting, working closely with the CEO and Finance Officer to ensure Trustees receive clear and timely financial information.

• Explaining financial information and technical accounting matters clearly to Trustees and supporting effective financial decision-making.

• Supporting the preparation and approval of the annual report and accounts and liaising with the independent examiner as required.

• Leading the development and review of the charity’s reserves policy and monitoring its free reserves position.

• Advising the Board on financial risk management, cost management and investment matters.

• Chairing the Finance Sub-Committee and reporting its work and recommendations to the Board.

• Providing financial input and challenge to fundraising applications, new initiatives and strategic opportunities where appropriate.

MumsAid currently uses Xero as its accounting system.

The role involves Board meetings, currently held online on Thursday evenings from 6.30–8.30pm, approximately 4–5 times per year, plus approximately 4–5 Finance Sub-Committee meetings each year. There is also an annual budget review, support with the preparation and review of annual accounts, an annual away day and occasional ad hoc advice to the CEO, Finance Officer and Trustees.

Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with MumsAid’s policy and Charity Commission guidance.

Our ideal candidate

We are looking for a qualified accountant and experienced finance professional who can bring both strong technical expertise and a strategic perspective to our Board.

Essential skills and experience:

• Qualified accountant with relevant professional experience.

• Strong commercial awareness and sound financial judgement.

• The ability to analyse financial information, identify risks and opportunities, and provide constructive challenge.

• Experience of communicating financial information clearly and confidently to non-finance colleagues and Trustees.

• Strong communication, influencing and leadership skills.

• The resilience and confidence to ensure that financial controls, processes and capabilities receive appropriate attention within a busy small charity.

• An understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of charity trustees, or a willingness to develop this knowledge.

• A commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and to safeguarding.

Desirable experience includes:

• Experience of charity finance and fundraising.

• Knowledge of charity accounting and the Charity SORP.

• Previous experience as a Treasurer, Trustee or in another non-executive governance role.

• Experience of strategic planning, financial management or organisational risk management.

• Experience of working with trusts, foundations or other grant-giving bodies.

• Experience of developing or reviewing reserves policies and financial controls.

We are particularly interested in someone who can translate financial information into clear, practical advice and help the Board understand the financial implications of strategic decisions.

You do not need to have previous experience as a charity Treasurer, but you should be comfortable operating at Board level and be willing to apply your professional expertise within a charitable setting.

MumsAid is committed to equality of opportunity and to being a fair and inclusive organisation. We particularly welcome applications from people who are underrepresented in our team and on our Board, including people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, disabled people, LGBTQI+ people and care-experienced people.

What’s in it for you

This is an opportunity to use your financial expertise to make a tangible difference to the lives of mothers, babies and families.

As MumsAid’s Treasurer, you will have a genuine opportunity to influence the financial sustainability and strategic direction of an established but growing charity. Your expertise will help ensure that MumsAid can make the best possible use of its resources and continue developing services in response to the needs of families.

You will work closely with our CEO, Finance Officer, Chair and Board of Trustees, providing financial insight and constructive challenge at Board level. You will also chair the Finance Sub-Committee, giving you an opportunity to contribute directly to the charity’s financial planning, risk management, reserves and long-term sustainability.

For a finance professional interested in developing or broadening their experience in the charity sector, this is an opportunity to apply your skills in a meaningful governance role and gain further experience of strategic financial oversight within a small, purpose-led organisation.

Most importantly, you will know that your contribution is helping MumsAid continue to provide specialist perinatal mental health support to women and families at an important and often challenging stage of their lives.

We are a small, committed organisation where Trustees can make a visible and meaningful contribution. You will join a collaborative Board and have the opportunity to help shape the future of a charity with an ambitious vision and a strong commitment to improving maternal mental health.
