About the organisation

Girlguiding London and South East England region (LaSER) is divided into 19 counties covering Greater London, Surrey, Sussex and Kent.

 

Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women, and our region supports over 55,000 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and volunteers. Through fun, friendship, challenge and adventure we empower girls to find their voice, inspiring them to discover the best in themselves and to make a positive difference in their community.

 

 

About the role

To monitor the financial administration of the charity and report to the Board of Trustees at regular intervals on its state of financial health, in line with best practice, and in compliance with the governing document and legal requirements.

 

  • Oversee and present the results of budgets, management accounts and the annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees.
  • Leading in the board’s duty to ensure that proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are properly controlled, invested and economically spent, in line with good governance, legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Leading in the development and implementation of financial reserves, cost‐management and investment policies.
  • Liaising, where applicable, with the members of staff responsible for the financial activities of the organisation.
  • Ensuring the annual financial statements are complete and accurate; reflecting a true and fair picture of the charity’s position in line with regulation and legislation.
  • Monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity.
  • Chair the Finance Group meetings which are held quarterly.
  • Overseeing and monitoring financial controls and adherence to systems.
  • Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan.
  • Acting as a counter signatory on charity cheques/banking payments and important applications.
  • Board‐level liaison with the external auditors on specific issues such as the Auditors’ Management Letter and the related board representations
  • Preparation of financial commentary in the Annual Report.
  • Building and maintaining a good working relationship with external stakeholders including but not limited to Girlguiding staff and volunteers, counties, payroll companies, pension providers, financial advisers, accountants, auditors and bank managers.
  • Any other duties which may be reasonably required.

Board meetings take place 4 times per year, either virtually or at our region headquarters in Wandsworth Common. This is not a paid role, but Girlguiding London and South East England will cover all reasonable expenses.

Our ideal candidate

Qualifications

  • CIMA, ACCA, ACA or other similar qualification. Part qualified and qualified by experience may be considered.

Experience

  • Budgeting/forecasting
  • Management accounting
  • Statutory financial reporting
  • Reporting to senior management/Board level
  • Knowledge of charity SORP and FRS102
  • Audit
  • Excellent communication

Person Specification

  • A commitment to Girlguiding London and South East England and a proactive interest and enthusiasm in shaping and advising on the future of Girlguiding London and South East England.
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to attend meetings (virtual and in person) including undertaking the appropriate preparation reading and work.
  • Good independent judgement and the ability to give constructive challenge.
  • An ability to think creatively and strategically.
  • An understanding and acceptance of legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship and the roles of boards.
  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • A commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to analyse and interpret information.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
